Default my friend is painting his wheels.

whats up guys, my friend wants to paint his wheels this weekend, and since lots of u have painted wheels i thought i'd ask here....here is his plan:

clean wheel really well. 2000 grit sandpaper the hell out of it...to rough it up...or would 1000 grit be better?? then tape off the tire and the lip (he wants to keep the lip silver) and paint it gloss black (5 coats) . then clear coat it (like 3 coats).

any suggestions? tips, hints? paint suggestions? anythign you'd like to add?

thanks

use index cards between the wheel and tire instead of taping
it saves so much time and works well also

take your time and dont do a half assed job cause you will regret it...

not necessary, but I went so far as to put a plastic tarp over the wet wheels while they were drying so no dust got on em. good luck.

so with the steps he has in mind..they'll come out fine?

what do you suggest for clear coat, we've painted before and the clear coat never really comes out smooth...its always kinda rough.

ill have before and after pics...i must warn you tho..its not a honda

Even if you do light and even coats, it will still come out somewhat rough. You can always try sanding with an extremely fine grit of sandpaper, or simply waxing the wheels always does the trick.

my wheels didnt come out rough..try using the duplicolor wheel clearcoat, it takes awhile to dry, but well worth the outcome

he got quoted anywhere from $65 (plus shipping) to $125 each wheel to get powdercoated...so spray paint it is
