93 civic with typr r motor wrecked

How do I tell what year the motor is?

look on the head not the block.

You can run the vin number on the block on carfax

it's right on the front of the head... you'll see a round stamp with two numbers inside yet. It'll like like this 9 | 6 for '96 or 9 | 8 for '98 and so on.

The first two numbers are 97 is this right? How can I tell if it is a type r or other?

if its a US type-R engine, the block stamp should read "B18C5", if jdm it will read "B18C"
