transmission problem (really loud noises)
especially in first gear, but in second also, my transmission is making some seriously lous noise. in first, it will start off nice and normal with no sounds and then by 3000rpm it sounds like a huge truck tranny (sometimes it starts right away as well). the noise is unbelievable. i was told that it could be a main bearing? i dont have a lot of knowledge about transmissions and would appreciate any suggestions, help, and thoughts that you guys could give me. also, any ideas on how much this would be to fix? would it be better just to source another low mileage used transmission? thanks.

It sounds like bearing noises to me. Have you checked/chnaged your tranny fluid lately? Also check for leaks. As far as price goes it depends on if you pull the tranny and take it to them.( cheaper) And also what all needs to be replaced. I would price a used tranny 1st and then ask a shop about estimate price on fixing it.
thanks for the reply. yeah, i just changed the tranny fluid actually. the noise has been around for about a month or so now. if it is bearings, which i am pretty sure it is, how long do i have before something bad happens, and how bad will it be? thanks.

no, there is no noise with the clutch out and the car in idle. it only appears when moving, prominantly in first and part of second gear. im guessing that it is because of the gear ratios and that the input shaft is moving so much more in first gear at lower rpms. thanks again for the replies.

my GF's CX has been making the exact same noise for over a year and we have had no problems except for the damn annoying noise..(waiting to get everything together for her swap)

well thats good to hear that it has lasted this long without any problem. the noise is very annoying though. especially when its cold it sounds like a diesel F150 accelerating. if i can find one local i may look to get a "new" tranny. seems like it would be a much less expensive fix at around $100-$150, but all i have found so far is ones from across the country. i cant imagine shipping on those would be cheap. thanks again.

Sounds like your imput shaft bearing is shot. It's a fairly common problem on the d-series.
It would probably cost several hundred (or more) to fix if you have to pay someone labor. If you don't want to fix it yourself, you might be better buying a replacement tranny.
IMO, the d-series tranny is harder to disassemble than the B, but with enough patience and a helms manual - and plenty of time - you should be able to change it.

yea i had the same problem it was the input shaft bearing, it grenaded and sent shrapnel throughout the tranny, completly fubar'd it
change it as soon as you can, its simple and cheap, and while you change that, do the diff bearing aswell

After playing with both...I know for a fact that B-series trannies are more complex and harder to work on than D-trannies

I don't think its your ISB...because if it was the ISB the tranny would chatter at idle and go away when you press your clutch in...PM mista bone and see what he thinks

it did chatter when the clutch was out, and it did blow up, cuz it was chattering, and it sent parts of the race, and ball bearings in the trany
thanks for the help everyone, thats why ilike this board, lots of knowledge and willingness to help out someone you dont know.
anyways, there is no chatter or anything with the tranny. other than the noise it is fine (at least at this point). it definitely seems as if it is some sort of bearing in there, but i am not sure what. i will have to whip out my Helms and take a look to see what it could be. one other piece of info.....whenever i am driving, it is the loudest an most noticeable in first gear. however, sometimes (i would say 20% of the time) it does not make the noise and sounds normal until about 3500 or 4000 rpm when i woudl shift. other times it makes the noise right away when accelerating (fast or slow).
thanks again.

i say get a Helm manual, and when you have the time to go without the car for a few days, pull the tranny out and take it apart.follow the manual and take your time and it's not hard at all.
