Default power steering question

IMHO i really don't care much for power steering, it feel too free for me, i like to make the car turn on MY own power, not the cars.

my question is, that someone told me if i totally remove my power steering, the steering rack will eventually lock up. has anyone had experience with this? or have knowlage of it?

another thing is that it feel like there's a little (play) in my steering. like i can move the steering wheel a little left to right and have no response from the wheels. how do i go about tightening this up?
thanks ahead of time for your help

I'm glad to see a question from you, instead of the usual one word filler posts to increase your post count

I'm just busting your balz, you have been here 77 days and have 809 post

809 posts (10.37 posts per day on average)

I have been here close to 4 years, and barely have double yours

Read the entire PS thread, it should answer some of your questions.

I read you thread from last year well 02, didnt anyone tell you that you can swap in a civic manual rack and U joint to your column? the turning ratio is better and in my opinion allthough you spent alot of time on your manual rack to keep from binding that is really bow arrow. all you need to do to the power rack is cap all holes just keep a bit of lube inthere, the reason it is harder to turn is because it is a power assist rack! wrong gearing. think 91 92CX rack fits all tegsG2 and 3 just make sure you get the knuckle, junker wants mayb 30 for it all.

slop is probably tie rod ends they need to be tight onto the taper shaft.

using the breather system and switching to manual steering for the Type R is - but parallel parking (especially on a hill) becomes challenging.

steering/road feel is greatly improved

slop in the steering system can be partially due to tires too - what kind of tires do you have??

So long as everything on the original power steering rack stays lubricated with power steering fluid then it won't eventually lock up. There are two ways to go about this, one is to simply leave the original power steering equipment in place and only remove the belt. The other is to obtain a system (like the one that Padawan sells) that loops either line back to a reservoir and keeps fluid in the system.

I have noticed that my car without power steering is still notably harder to turn at low speed than my brothers del sol without power steering. It does feel a hell of a lot better on the road though.

Padawan was selling power steering removal kits a while back -- not sure if he still is or not:

Let me know how it is. I've been meaning to get it also, but I keep putting it off. I have a friend with it on an LS, but I don't know how it is on an ITR yet.

Thanks Mike. At this point JUN.R has reserved the only left-over kit I had from this current batch, but depending on how things work out, there may wind up being one or two others. Regardless, there will be another batch soon.

N/P

I meant to pick up one of the kits, but got so busy that I forgot I'll definitely be interested in picking one up when the next batch is ready.

How much for the kit? Care to let me know if/when you have another available?
