What is the biggest difference a sleeve with or without a close deck ??? pros and cons
Ok I just want to know this because I dont understand the difference between the Benson sleeve and the Darton for example.... Why the Darton use the " kind of blockguard " on the top of the sleeve ( I know that you cant compare to the blockguard ....) but it just bugs me ????
What are the advantage of the two ????
Thank you guys !!!

lol shaking? you're joking right.
any aftermarket sleeve will work whether it be an open deck like benson's or closed deck like darton.
cooling is fine with both.

An open deck cools better where as a closed deck may not. there are plunty of ways to keep the temp down though.
An open deck doesn't SEEM as strong on the top, where as a closed does. All the action goes on in the top of the cylinder, thats where I would want support.
In short there are pros and cons to both, your choice should be dependant on your goals.
If the motor is mild in power and daily driven, run open. Its cheaper than most (benson) and should be sufficient. If its a track only monster and you want the upmost strength and durability, run closed. A track car isn't running as long as a street car is, and even though it runs harder, not in such a long, stop and go duration.
Thats my 2cents.

About the cooling, what use is it running open deck if the head isn't open? The restriction problably comes in the head, I am sure darton designed their sleeves to flow the same as the head?
I have not seen a darton in person, to compare to my head, however I have the manual as I plan to get some, and it seems that it will keep up with the head.
I think also due to the darton design it is a bit safer, although the benson is 100% bulletproof, people running them on here are putting down lots of power without problems...

Its more about heat transfer than any flow restiction. With the open deck the heat from the head and the top of the cyl. is transfered to the coolant faster.Aluminum will dissapate heat quicker than cast iron. The open deck exposses more surface to the coolant.
most of the heat will be dissapated in the head... has anyone tried both setups to have some numbers... it would be interesting to see real world numbers. The question is whether or not the difference will be enough to cause problems?
Yes closed deck will run a little hotter ...But the big reason that we dont recomend closed deck on the street is that continuious piston motion as in daily driving on the freeway or street will egg shape or put the cylinders out of round. When running the open deck block on the street the sleeves and allowed to move alittle bit so that you dont have the out of round problem. JOJO (Castrol Syntec Car) ran the RS Magnum block (open deck block) for years until he started making over 800 hp.The problem was the sleeves started shaking and rocking wich caused the headgaskets to blow.So he stepped up to the RS Magnum Pro block and hasent had the problem since.
Why not compromise and get the GE? It is semi close deck...I was in the same dilema 2 yrs ago and I chose GE because I have enough headaches with going fast...
RS: Which one is the easiest to install, and the easiest to mess up? I can't send my block to any US builder it will be to expensive, so I have to use a local engine builder, I have not found anyone that has done it before, but I have found some that have the ability to do it, but I am worried... I thought the closed deck might be a safer option?

ahem hes talking about an 800 hp race car running 40+ lbs of boost, show me a street car that does that.
and i didn't say cooling was better one way or another, just stated they are both fine meaning you won't have any problems.
out of round cylinders is another issue
I don't deal with race cars b/c a street car is much more fun so thats where I come from.
