well i've heard to let them seat you have to let the motor run at like 2200 rpm for like 20 mins right at the first turn over and then break in your motor for like 1000 miles only reving at a max to 4k rpms. I'm not sure about the first part the second part seems to be right.

Break them in for a good 500 miles. You need to seat the rings so it's good to drive with more load on it than normal..... meaning, drive in the higher gears and make the motor work harder so it seats the rings properly. Also, give it gas and let off, and give it gas again and keep on doing while driving those first few hundred miles. I wouldn't go past 4000 rpms for the most part but you should be fine if everything is put together correctly. I'm doing the samething right now to my daily driver with the motor that I just dropped in earlier this week.

drive it like you stole it after intial break in.

There are many different "ways" to break in a new engine...some of which are....

increasing RPM range slowly
driving under certain RPM for xxxxx miles
driving hard all the time

etc etc.

You will be able to tell when the rings have seated.....do a compression test, if all is good, then change the oil and rip! I've never had a problem

+ what Emerika said: OIL/FILTER change after 500.
You can do it again at 1000 if you want..

key thing is just changing the oil no matter which way you break it in....with ring filings, bearing coating, and assembly lube and some gasket maker, it's better to get that out as soon as you can

I'd agree with that, everyone seems to have their own school of thought, and after asking a similar question myself, I have gotten many responses claiming succesful break-ins with all the above mentioned methods.

What I wanted to add, is that it seems no matter which theory you subscribe to, they all seem to agree that letting the car sit and idle upon first start up is the worst thing you can do to it.
