Can i remove a crx alt. from the top?
I am eplacng a friends alternator for him in an 89' HF. I don't want to take out the axle, I have all the bolts out and plugs undone. I am wondering if anyone has pulled it through the top instread of dropping it, thanks.. Also, can I remove the brake booster enough to pull it up? Take it off the black round deal? thanks!

you do not have to take out the axle at all... you can just drop it from the bottom.. just jack up the car put it on jack stands and move it around, there is a position where the alternator will drop right away. Then you can put it back in the same way. I have done this myself with my 89 DX and i know for a fact that it works. I dont think it can be done from the top.
Good luck..
Good luck..
It won't come out from the top. take off the lower alternator bracket and you can pull it through the bottom, did it on my 89 dx.
DO IT THIS WAY, DONT GET DIRTY
Cant come out from the top? **** that, Ive done it twice form completely different places. You can unbolt the 2 nuts that hold the master cylinder to the firewall and just move it up and out of the way without unhooking the brake lines and it fits out. Or you can unbolt it completely and reach down and smack it all the way over to the left side and it come easily out from under you airbox (have to remove airbox)

im not seeing how it can fall through the bottom at all, like it does on my 95 hatch. But im shitty at the fitting game. But I am going to try moving the brake cyl. and I should be alright. I appreciate all of the input.

no prob just dont undo the brakelines at the top of the cylinder or youll have to bleed the breask and that will defeat the purpose of not having to go under the car

All you have to do is turn the steering wheel all the way to the left when its jacked up, this moves the axle and provides enough room to wiggle it out the bottom.
Um this really is in a way off topic but on a DX you can pull it from the top without touching anything cause the diff shape in the manifold. That is for all you DX guys that took it out the bottom
Easy fellas, the easiest way to do it from the top is simple. I did this 4 times on my dx as well my last si. Undo the alternator and slide it under the intake manifold to the passenger side. Take off the intake tube. This part is a little tricky as far as what way the alternator should be facing (take a few to figure it out.). I simply pulled it between the coolant lines entering the firewall. It is a little tight, (moreso for the si's) but can be done in a few minutes. Going back in is so much easier. It just kind of flows right where you just spent 5 minutes pulling it from. I even did this roadside in the winter once! Good luck and be patient....no need to bend or take off anything (except intake tube.) Good luck friends.
I've done it from the top on d16 and b16, just unbolt (2 bolts) the master cyl. and move it out of the way. the brake lines wont break or kink it's ok. don't disconnect the brakelines from the mast cyl. Pull out the alternator and enjoy.
It come out either way, but i prefer to pull it from the bottom. When doing it on my old motor in the CRX, once unbolted, jack up the car turn the whell and its out in less than a minute. It was so easy!
I think it may have been easier since the car has lowering springs on it, everything was lined up underneath where i could hold the altenator in my hand , make a twist and it would come right out.

You guys taht claim its easy must have magically lower alternator bolts.
Removing mine took 3 hours, a hell of allot of propane, a breaker bar and allot of liquid wrench on my Si.
On my dx I had to remove the axle and knucle, grind off the head of the lower bolt and beat it out with another bolt and hammer.
I hate those ******* alternators...no one ever puts antiseize compound on that bolt

If you do take it out by the air box you have to remove some coolant lines.
