Opinions needed. 12.5 lb Flywheel on a B16A1 with Y-1 Trans on the street
This is a 12.5 lbs flywheel, organic Exedy clutch VS stock flywheel for street use. Is this going to offer noticible acceleration in lower gears with the Y-1 trans or is this wasting my time and money. Not for the Drag strip but on the street. '89 DX hatch w/ full interior.
I just put on a 9lb Spoon flywheel on my J1 tranny and I noticed a huge difference in acceleration. The Y1 1st gear seems shorter than the J1 though.
I have a 9lb on my d16a6, with an exedy organic, and I f'in love it. There is a noticable difference on the top end, but you do loose some torque...but hey...its a Honda...do you really care about torque? 12.5 should treat you well

Yes I am not sure I want a 9lb wheel because I do a lot of city stop and go driving, thats why I have to use a organic disk. But don't want to spend the bucks for a 12.5 lb wheel if its not going to make a noticible difference.
Not at all prone to stalling ?I heard real light wheels make it far easier to stall. because I do the DC-VA drive daily a few times usually. THis is a daily driver work car. I need to decide real soon, next few hours to get it ordered if I get it, I want to slap a new clutch in because I have no idea how old the one in it is yet. Haven't pulled the engin from the SiR clip yet.
If you're a good driver then it won't stall. I have not had any problems stalling whatsoever. I would order the 12lb one if I had the chance, but the 9lb revs so nice. I jumped from stock to 9lb so I couldn't tell you how a 12lb would be.

Here in LA with traffic-Hell no I think my left leg is buffer than my right
No gain in acceleration but it feels better (feels quicker)

I have the CM 7.5 lb. flywheel with an Action HD clutch, so I can't give you a direct comparison, but personally I think that the clutch will decide what kind of behavior you have upon engagement, more so than the flywheel - although lighter flywheels obviously don't hold as much inertia as the stock one.
I have to hold the revs slightly higher and/or let the clutch out slower. Raising the idle just a hair helps, too.

Well, I know how clutch engages is dependent on the clutch type of clutch used, ergo thats why I am going organic, Cerametalics chatter and grab too much for the type of driving I do most. But if I need to slip clutch a lot ot get moving in traffic thats bad too, as it takes a lot of life of the clutch. And if it really doesn't help noticibly with acceleration of the car, and not just feel like it then its not my best option and the money would be best spent on something else. Not into reving it just to hear it rev. but if the 1st and 2nd acceleration is improved by the lighter wheel then I want to do it. Not talking timeslips showing a difference, but a difference that is big enough you can feel it.
IMO, it's worth it.
I never got to drive my car with stock flywheel, the ACT 8.8 lb flywheel was installed with the swap. I couldn't tell you the difference from stock, but it the revs drop and fall very fast.

Dang this is a hard choice to make. wanted to order this morning, and still can't decide. Trying to find a good deal on a header that wont rust, Already have a 2.5 catback from before and a CAI, but really could run stock clutch and exhaust manifold until I am sure. Wife is already freaking about the money for the half cut. But thats the only way I was going to be certain about milage. I am not going to rebuild it, just the obvious and prudent things to drive it. But it would be far easier if I did it before it went in and then I would likely never worry about it again.
Interesting.... someone metioned the Y1 has shorter gears than the S1/ J1 which is correct as far as I know. The lightened flywheel would def make them seem shorter. As for stalling I can understand that it may require you to rev a tad bit higher than you might be used to w/ the stock fly. I think people concerned with torque are looking generally at drag type applications. The launch being the only time that a lightened flywheel isn't giving you the desired effect. Once the car is in motion though, the effect of the rev:time factor easily compensates for the "torque at the wheels"... especially if you are an autoX or roadrace type person.
well I am not a dragstrip guy but I do like acceleration. I will trade lauch for acceleration through the gears . Basicly with the Y-1 if I accelerate through the lower gears faster due to the light flywheel it means more to me that a neck snapping launch from a stop.
i had a 13lb shaved flywheel on my stock d16a, i think it helped a little bit...overall, it made my car more responsive and i could feel a little boost in acceleration. i would recommend it as well, there were no drivability issues with me, and i drove 190 miles avg a week
i have a 7.5 lb flywheel an stage 3 clutchmasters with a ctr n1 crank pulley in a S1 tranny that i drive EVERYDAY. its not that big of a deal. it revs riduculously quick an is a blast to drive. that combo will do you well, but im agianst a flywheel unless its at least a 9lb. my freind just put a 12lb in his crx an it wasnt that impressive to me. i never stall an its awesome once you gett used to it
I agree with everyone else. Its easy to drive, and is comfortable all the time. I have a b16 with fidanza flywheel, and a act hd pressure plate, and organic disk. Ryan
So I get the drift the the flywheels in the 8 lb range are not too light for the street. And that I should see some improvement over a stock flywheel in acceleration in lower gears. So maybe I will rething the lower weight flywheels. I will not run a shaved flywheel, it will be manufactured as a lightweight flywheel. Have one in mind but the Flywheel clutch combo is $510 for exedy stage one organic clutch and 8.5 lb flywheel or like $495 with the 12.5 lb one.
