Is it worth it to buy expensive shocks on a no-gap suspension setup?
Do the shocks even play a role in suspension when our EF's are basically lowered without any fender gap? I heard it just rides on the bumpstops, is this true?

you heard wrong.
a combination of properly matched springs rates to the dampening of the shocks will make all the difference. i have progress springs with HPs, which are on the ragged edge of their capabilities of 400/300 rates of the springs, there is no gap at all with those springs and it rarely bottoms out, only on the steepest turns on high G loads.
if your car rides on bumpstops you have something missing in the equation or something is mismatched.
