Default The Intake Thread

I am in the market for an intake and a search here didnt come up with anything, so I thought I would list all the options and we could go over them to hopefully come to a conclusion.

AEM CAI-
Most Power
Hydrolocking
Priced Right

Comptech-
BS Complaints
Not as much gains
No Hydrolocking
VERY Expensive

Weapon R-
Cheap?

PRM-
Sketchy Gains
Sound
No Hydrolocking

I am open to the AEM, Comptech, and PRM. I would prefer the AEM the most and the Comptech the least. Does anyone run any of these? Can you provide more info to sway me either way?

i wouldnt risk getting *ANY* CAI due to the fact that it sits so low it can take in water AND debris(wearing out your engine much quicker).

I've had the Comptech for quite some time now. The one I have was on the first production run. It doesn't pick up as low as the others and because of the design of the box, there should be a reduced risk of hydro-locking. Of course, even with the stock box, there is a risk depending on the amount of water you are forging, so I won't say it is impossible. (nor improbable that you'll forge water either)

Gains on the Comptech CAI - minimal, but there are some. I wouldn't say it is as great as the AEM or Injen, but it does give a little more positive lower end response. Some resonance at mid-range RPM's. Other than that, a well designed and thought out product as opposed to a tube with a filter on the end.

The Spoon and like intakes - great gains on the track or anything 'at-speed'. Don't expect it to be compared to like the rest, or even gains on a quarter mile or even street racing for those of you who do that. But at 60 or 70 mph, there will be definate gains side by side. At the track, there have been definate MPH increases on some straightaways with the Spoon Intakes.

There are others out there, I simply listed the ones that I can afford.

I agree, hydrolocking is scary as hell, but the gains are very nice, where as with most of the other intakes the gains are almost non existant. I am still unsure of what I want to do.

Guys, you won't hydrolock unless you submerge the filter. SUBMERGE. This has been exhausted before...so don't worry about hydrolocking unless you plan on driving through very deep water.

I'm running the PRM and very happy with it. Minimal gains, but the sound is next to none. By far the loudest of all the intakes.

If you're interested in the AEM, look into the 4IG intake. Very similar design and costs about $135 for the kit.

As far as hydrolocking, yes if you submerge it in water, ie big puddle it will give you problems. Another thing to keep in mind is that the drain for the water run off for the hood/fender is located about where the filter would be located. This would inturn soak the filter and cause some problems--look this topic up at s2ki.com.

I hear the PRM intake sounds the best by far, but I have also heard of loses in the powerband, not something Im gonna pay for. But if you like it, thats all that matters.

As far as hydrolocking, its not a matter of if will it or wont it happen, its a matter of what if it does? Im out a 5000 dollar motor for the 2hp I gained.

My point is that it doesn't happen unless you purposely drive through deep water. The filter is protected behind a splashguard, and even a little bit of water that splashes up won't hurt.

i think the best bet would be an upgraded filter and maybe a spoon air duct or something...for some reason i dont like the aem due to the suck *** throttle response...IMO mugen and the J's systems seem to perform the best then come the comptech icebox....also im not sure if this helps but remove the cover where the air travels to near the intake box in the corner by the pass side radiator

also do u have to cut any parts of the car to install the aem?? i think so

Another reason I went with Comptech. And for most of us spending 1000 on an intake is out of the question.

I had the intake installed today, I like it. Sounds great, minor gains across the board, really cleans up the engine bay too.

add ITB's to the list.. ...and when did cwest make an intake for the s2k??..best bet would b to use ITB's(if u can afford it ) and use some type of intake to flow air into the ITB's..i think i can find a pic of what im talking about

Look out before you recommend or even bring up ITBs. There has yet to be a dyno graph showing the gains/losses of the ITBs only.

sorry...not sure if it provides crazy gains...but this setup looks sick...

i saw another setup where there was a tube runngin from the left headlight was (place where the comptech & PRM intakes gets it air from) to the ITB setup..

I agree. Toda has a nice setup coming out soon. But again I am waiting for dyno proof. Cwest has had their intake out for almost a month now. It really debuted at the TAS. You can actually buy it. Call up Motorex to inquire. Your looking at close to if not over $1000 for the intake.

Heres my setup..

it's good to see he's running some sort of mesh filter or whatever so he doesn't suck up dirt and leaves, quite different than some setups you've probably seen where it just looks cool or sounds cool but no dyno was ever done to show the gains of the ITB alone. I have to say it again, it's questionable that ITB's work well with this car unless the internals are modified through more aggressive camshafts as well as higher compression pistons. Installing an AEM EMS alone with tuning makes good gains for this car, but I doubt we'll see anytime soon a fully tuned car with the EMS...a dyno plot of that...and then a dyno plot of the ITB's added and tuned to isolate the gains of the ITBs alone. It'll be apparent that the cost of such a system wont justify it's gains. I'll eat my words when I see such a dynoplot showing ITBs alone making 50whp as claimed before and that person got flamed for not backing up his claims.

Jesus Christ, $1000 for an intake? It's an intake...move on to bigger and better things!

Welcome to the world of owning a real sports car.

One bad thing, they know you can afford the parts if you bought the car.

My point is just that for $1000 there are easier ways to make power. It's just an intake, there are other more important things to upgrade.
