Steering problem with my EG sedan
whats up everyone, Im new here and this is my first post. I have an eg sedan and it was giving me steering problems lately, when i was coasting or on light throttle the steering wheel would jerk to the right. I turned the wheel at a stop and i heard two loud pops and the jerking thing never happened again. Now the problem is that when i turn left i hear a click click click that is directly related to the speed of the wheel rotation. Is my axle fucked up? or alignment or what? I guessed alignment because this is the first front wheel drive car I have had.
The clicking you are hearing when turning is probably your axle. The quick jerk to the right could have been a dip in the road, maybe alignment, dead cat you ran over, but just jack your car up and check the axles.
thanks a lot man. Ive been meaning to do that but I have a broken down datsun in my garage right now. Ill check it out asap. How much whould a new axle cost btw?
You can go to autozone and with the core replacement get an axle for $55 plus tax. Not too bad, plus it has a lifetime warranty.
Could be a few things.
1. wheel bearing bad. Easy to check, try to move the wheel back and forth. It shouldnt move at all. If there is play back and forth, the wheel bearing is bad.
2. Axle. Check the seals around the axle..if they are badly worn or ripped, the axle could be bad. Check for oil around the axles seals. Also make sure the axle nut is tight.
3. Steering rack loose. There is two or three bolts that hold the steering rack to the frame. On my car, the bolts came loose after around 200,000 miles and the whole steering rack was loose. So you would be going straight and all of a sudden the car would jerk. It was mad scary. Just tightened the bolts and that fixed that problem.
Good luck!
