Bad clutch makers
well to make a long post short i was wondering what clutch makers to stay away from? Ive been looking at ACT, CM, and Exedy and also thought about sticking with the stock clutch. My stock clutch is about to take a **** so I need a new one. I really couldnt find any horror stories while using the search button, but the worst i could find is that some clutch required post-install adjusting (which i dont understand considering hydraulic trannies and all).
I've heard that ACT makes good clutches, but I know for sure they have a shitty warranty policy.

same here too...had a CM stage 3 in my car for a long time making a lot of power.finally got worn out after many miles-much longer than i expected...i've installed plenty of CM clutches and know many people that use them-never heard a complaint..i've also installed some ACT clutches, and honestly,i wasn't as impressed with them.on some boards the ACT products also seem to have a bad reputation.
i'd go with a CM product,if you even need an aftermarket clutch.with just bolt-ons you could get away with either a stock setup or a lower level CM product..
either way i'd suggest a billet flywheel-you'll love it!

If you have any questions about ACT, I am available by email or the HT forum. If you want the sales pitch, let me know. Otherwise, I will spare everyone the chatter.<TABLE WIDTH="90%" CELLSPACING=0 CELLPADDING=0 ALIGN=CENTER><TR><TD>Quote, originally posted by ITR 98 1162 »</TD></TR><TR><TD CLASS="quote">I've heard that ACT makes good clutches, but I know for sure they have a shitty warranty policy.

Do a search for exedy. Quite few people posted problems with this clutch. I drove someone else's ITR with one in it. I liked the feel of it but would be weary of longevity. My oem works fine for now

in exedy's defense,i have installed a few of their factory replacement clutches and they always seem to do well.i can't comment on their performance products though.i was under the impression that Exedy manufactured clutches for some OEMs-am i wrong?if they do,their quality SHOULD be top-notch.

Running strong on my exedy organic replacement clutch. 5 HPDE's and a few drag launches and it still holds and grabs. Although I will be switching to clutchmasters as soon as I get my 2.0L finished.
OEM is the best choice I made. I can't believe that I paid more for a clutch that couldn't even hold up as good as my stock.
For those who don't know, I got my car with 32k on the OEM clutch and drove it till about 50k with A LOT of stupid driving like 7k double clutches, lots of drag racing, and stupid rice boy stuff from back in the day. Yet it still lasted over a year from when I got it.
My ACT clutch was pure JUNK along with their customer service.
Now my new OEM clutch has lasted over 1 year with a few autoxs and lots of VTEC and NOT 1 SINGLE PROBLEM.
If you don't plan to add a ton of HP, OEM is the way to go. It may not be as stiff as an aftermarket clutch, but will last.

We put an Exedy in My brothers ITR hatch and it lasted over 35K. We put an Exedy in my friends GSR and it was done in under 10K
I'm looking for a replacement as well....

You purchased an ACT stock replacement disc to go with your Xtreme pressure plate, instead of an ACT performance street disc that has steel backed linings. It is apparent that the outside of the linings blew off because of high rpm.
Still IMO we would have, or should have, worked with you to resolve the situation regardless of choosing the inexpensive disc. We are often complimented on our customer service and like most companies, sometimes criticised. I take the criticism seriously and we are always trying to improve. If I had time to do customer service myself, along with the job of maybe 20 other people I have working for me, it could be better. But then again, I have another other people working for me that do a better job than I ever could in their positions.

I had friends with problems with ACT before were the tranny end up being destroy . ( dont have exactly the details ) but it was also a while back and im not sure to what extend ACT has improve on there clutches .
As far as Tilton goes , i would stay away from it . I blew 3 Tilton clutches , 2 of them in normal driving conditions .
An i believe it was the cause that i end up changing the tranny also .. messing first gear really bad , even after changing the synchros
