SOMEONE PLEASE HELP ME RESOLVE A MINOR DISAGREEMENT
I have just turboed a honda CRX ZC which is running good at the moment although i have only test driven it twice for a short period of time. My mate who is a trainee mechanic reckons I cannot turbo a engine without uprating all the piston rings and con rods otherwise my engine will blow within a short period of time. I know this is a must when exceeding 7-8 PSI or so but I have heard loads of guys who have turboed hondas and had no problems. I am convinced i can make a reliable setup on a stock engine as long as i keep thing under 7 PSI. also can most engines take 7 PSI without uprated internals?
The current setup i have is a t25 from a Saab oil and water cooled, and SAFC with 450DSM's, intercooled running a max of 5.5 PSI (but may spike)
Please can someone set me straight on this? whether i should take more time and do everything or is my mate just to by the book....
thanks in advance

send ur scarvy mate off thee plank into the abyss of sharks.. ayyyeee!!!
ur motor will be fine on 10psi or less, so long as its tuned.

your fine with stock internals. at least i know i am, lol. My buddy says i need new vavle springs and yadda yadda but he's wrong and your friend sounds like he's a lil wrong too
Your mate is going by the book, and hes outdated a few years if I must say
Im no expert when it comes to ZC motors, but there are tons of guys making 300+ hp on stock honda motors, tuning is the key. As long as you have everything fuctioning and a good fuel system you have nothing to worry about, especialy on that low of boost. Remember most prefabed kits come with 6-8 psi wastegate spring and you dont need to build the motor to install a Pre-fab kit.
Whats your feul setup btw? Sounds like maybe your mate is jealous

ah ha thanks dude! i go chop his nads off! so when u say "tuned" that seems a fairly broad term, u mean timing retarted? fuelling right? anything else? Is it best to dyno the car? or tune with wideband o2 on the public highway? or is that down to personal preference... i dont wanna be taking it back to the dyno every time i have a little tweek, id rather do it myself and learn... or is that whne things go bang lol
thanks for the input

i think he is ya know...
fuelling i cant remember off the top of my head, -44 low down and bout -36 high up i think
the wastegate im using is the standard one that came with the turbo (from a saab) the whole kit is DIY, i think this is why my mate doubts me. how much should i have ignition retarded by? i have an MSD ignition not wired in yet but was gonna get MSD BTM add on at some stage....
also do i need to upgrade my fuel pump? I have a walbro 255lph but have not fitted it yet
cheers

most mechanics are only good for changing oil and brake jobs
...you can get away with alot of boost if you have good tuning..i run more boost on my stock motor than people say is safe even with forged pistons/rods lol

my local mechanic knows how to change waterpumps and timing belts on supras in 20 minutes flat, but you say turn the boost up to 1.5 bar and i swear, i know more intelligent teenagers on the subject...
I doubt they teach you even what a turbocharger is in a "mechanics" book. heh

Last time I checked saabs dont have T25's. They have small T3's. Your T25 is most likely off an eclipse/mitsubishi. Either way it's a fairly small turbo and you're intercooled. If your timing's retarded a tad and you're not running lean, you're more than fine

the saab turbo is from a UK spec car, possibly why it seems a little un heard of over there.
My fuelling setup is 450DSM's B&M fuel pressure reg, and SAFC hack. should i uprate my fuel pump? i have a walbro 255lph but its just not fitted yet
