Code 9: My problem: misfire to cel to misfire
I threw a code 9 at the track and I started to misfire at low-end (under 6k).
I used my friend's obd2 dizzy and voila! No more CEL. However, when driving it around, I began to misfire like CRAZY when vtec engaged. Also, the tach needle was fluctuating up and down when it engaged too.
What could it be the problem? I did a comp test anyways, numbers tested out fine.
I have an idea of the problem, but I wanna see what everyone else says.
Thanks

if you have a timing gun, check it out. it could very well be that, but i don't know how your timing would jump so far like that unless you jumped teeth either from a tooth on the belt wearing down or getting shaved off. inspect the underside of the belt, every tooth

jumps all over the place. usually up. from like, 6k to 8k? 8.4k? it fluctuates back and forth. i can never really tell my rpms after..and misfire is crazy. my plugs and wires are 7k mi old,
i doubt the off timing would make the tach jump around like that, i could be wrong. do what you can to trouble shoot it as soon as you can, and i wouldn't drive the car with it doing that.
pretty sure people with the same problem will respond to this tomarrow sometime. if not, definately take it to the dealer. might be a little easier then replacing parts untill the problem is solved.
another thing is that maybe something is wrong with your friends distributor even though it got rid of the CEL

Hey man what year is your ITR...? I used to work at Acura and have been up there lately hanging out and friend of mine who works in parts said there is some kinda re-call on specifically 97 GSR ecus for a misfire code... I don't know if this also applies to ITR's, but I guess you could call them and find out if the re-call applies to ITR's...? HTH...
01. actually - anyone know what kinds of dizzy's can i use? i'm looking into buying one, and i want to hav more options open.
Unless you have a lot of parts to swap out, take it to Acura. Sounds very likely (>95%) you have an ignition problem. I'm thinking 1) Igniter, 2) Dizzy parts or 3) ECU. Tach is electronic, and part of the ignition. Tach is spazzing cos of whatever in the ignition is hosed. I think the 'coil' is part of the igniter (haven't had an Acura one apart that far yet so not sure). I'd try the igniter if you swapped the dizzy. If you have a problem in the igniter high tension circuit/coil, that would cause what you are experiencing. Also, misfires are very often the igniter.
Did you change to aftermarket wires and such 7K ago? How many miles on the rest of the ignition? Sometimes that change will push a marginal igniter over the edge, due to the resistance changes. Also check all the wires to the dizzy, and all the connections. Look carefully for carbon tracking also. Did you do a motor wash anytime recently?
DONT drive it like that, and DONT go into VTEC. You are risking possible engine damage (pistons, rods, valves).

guess what guys? i got the new dizzy and it runs like a kitten. it's idling right now - no problem. vtec engages just fine. I picked up the Distributor King's dizzy for 278 shipped overnight brand new, 1 yr warranty if ANYTHING fails! A+ to Pat.
I found out why my dizzy went bad. it's an 01 motor and when I took off the cap, TONS of plastic crap was sitting in the rotor. I'm about to take off the rotor and inspect it when - wait? Where's the rotor screw? I yank off the rotor and the plastic covering to see the screw came off and OWN3d the inside of the dizzy! The sensor was so jacked up. Problem solved. I just need to get timing.
Btw, Pat at Distributor King (H-T Sponsor) was very helpful and provided excellent service.
