Default can you clean the top of the pistons?

my friend is about to change his headgasket and was wondering if you could clean the top of the pistons when the head is off? we won't see the pistons until he takes his head off, but if they have carbon build up, could he use something to take it off the pistons?

If you're not going to bother taking them out of the block to clean them then I definitely wouldn't do it.

you could..but a little carbon isnt bad...just a little extra compression

a hot spot? not if you do the whole piston. the engine builder does that to your pistons when he builds it anyway its fine, just dont go overboard.

and it really isnt good to have build up , becuase then if you get uneven build up on each cyl, youll have diff compressions which might not make too much of a difference, but id rather know its done.
