i think its time for the timing belt?

when i was coming home from work i heard a metal to metal sound coming from the belt side. It was a squealing sound. it is a 88 crx si with 157,000 on the engine. so what could it be? and time for a new engine?

Do you have A/C?? If so check out your compressor and see if thats making the noise. If not check your alternator.

i cut the ac belt a long time ago. is it the pulleys? please help diagnose.

Chech the tensioner pulley bearing on both the timing belt tensioner pulley and the accessory drive belt tensioner pulley. I had a bearing in a fan belt tensioner pulley fail without making a sound and I only noticed it when I smelled the burning rubber of the fan belt going over the frozen pulley.
