Default axle replacement from hell, seized bushing

So I finally got the ball joint loose, and I was hoping to be able to fit the axle through the damper fork. No go. The through-bolt is seized to the bushing in the control arm. What should I do to get it out? I've heard of using an air hammer with a sharp bit and just "raping" it out heh. Then using a universal balljoint press to push the new bushing in. Does this work? Any other ideas? I can't remove the control arm because other bolts holding it to the subframe are of course seized. This is on a 88 Accord Carburated by the way.

There's an easy way. Take the axle apart to remove it.

Cut the boot band on the inside boot and pull it apart. It will come out easily.

With the new axle, you will have to cut the same boot band (buy a new band and a boot band tool to tighten the new one). Put the shaft through the wishbone and put the axle back together with a new boot band.

Try not to drop any of the bearings while you have the new axle apart.

Why do you say that? I do it all the time.

It's the only way to replace an axle on most older cars because the lower wishbone bolt is usually frozen.

Yea it works fine. thanks a lot for the idea. it didn't come apart very easily tho. it has a c-clip in it just like on the end of the axle that goes into the tranny. i ended up giving it a couple wacks with a rubber mallet to get it off.

If you do need to get the damper fork off I can tell you how I did it on my 89 Accord.
