Default Looking for nice header

Hi guys, i have a 2001 Type R and i want to change my stock header, but don't know which header to get.

I am looking for something that will be worth it and that will give me more horsepower and torque.

Can you guys please recommend me which header to get and how much more Hp and torque gains can i get?

So far, i have the comptech 4-2-1 header in mind, but i am starting to look at the comptech racing header.

I just got an ITR JDM 4-1 installed on mine along with the AEM CAI that i have. The power gain is noticeable and the sound is deeper and raspier. Next mod will prolly be the VAFC.

how much hp and torque gains can i expect to get from the jdm 4-1 header?

And how about the comptech 4-2-1 street and racing headers?

Any opinions on those:

what do you guys think of this new comptech racing header? I am trying to compare this with the street comptech 4-2-1 header:

Well, I got the MoTec headerz a few months ago and noticed a gain of about 25 whp with no tunin'. I'll wait til I get my APC intake to take it to the dyno.

comptech street header only has a 2" collector i believe. I just put on a jdm 4-1 on my gsr and on the butt dyno i can feel noticable gains.

thanks guys for all the replies :>

is a 3"collector better to get or is a header with 2.5"collector enough to get?

And what do you guys think of an off road comtech racing header? Why is it so expensive? 900 something US. Should i take off my catalytic and drive without it for better flow?

And if i have a choice between a shiny stainless steel header or a ceramic one, which one is better? the stainless steel is more expensive but is it better?

thanks guys.

I have the DC Sports 4 into 1 JDM Spec (with the 2.5" collector) and had noticeable gains especially at the top end.

T1R makes both a 4 into 1 and a 4-2-1 header as well.
Spoon's header is nice as well. I know people with both the Spoon header and the T1R 4-2-1 on their R's and are very happy with them.

I ended up going with the DC Stainless because the overall quality looked better than the T1R I was considering. The rest of my exhaust is T1R.

you might want to read up on the original header test, and the more recent one done by titan motorsports.. I believe they tested the comptech piece.. SMSP is another excellent selection if you're willing to pay that much..

for a cheaper alternative, I run the DC JDM 4-1.. best bang for the buck IMO..

and yes, a 2.5" collector is what you want.. no need for anything bigger on most apps..

would you think that it is worth it to remove my catalytic converter when installing the header? I know it will be illegal but will i gain much more power this way?

well.. I have an SMSP testpipe.. no idea what gains were made with it, since i had no frame of reference using all new stuff, but it sure does smell funny.. hehe..

seriously though, I would expect SOME sort of gain out of it.. probably a few HP.. is it worth it? only you and your accountant can decide that..

There are no performance differences between a stainless or ceramic, just that the polished stainless looks nicer, but the ceramic coated one will retain heat better. There are basically a few dozen different brands and types of headers on the market, and can range from 300 to 1300 dollars if you pocket book will go that deep. The majority will suggest a header with a 2.5" collector, and you will have to purchase rather a 2.5" catalytic or testpipe, because the stock R collector is 2" and will not fit onto a JDM style aftermarket header. You also get what you pay for, and some of the longer tube headers (comptech race, SMSP, Hytech) will give you the most gains with tuning, although you will need to run a custom cat/testpipe with some of these.
