Honda Challenge Question
Hey,
Ok for another NASA question
. I was wondering how do you get a liscence in NASA for HC? Is there a school at every event? Can you get it by HPDE? How many do you have to do and all? Any input welcome, thanks!

in nasa they require you to move up the 'ranks' hpde 1 hpde 2 hpde 3 hpde 4 then you can get your comp school and get a provisional licence if you pass the comp school....no set number....
These things are on the Honda Challenge website. They really are. I'm not lying. You just have to, like, look for it.

If there are questions beyond what has been on on the web for nearly two years, I'm sure the guys running the show for 2004 would be happy to oblige.

I did look there but was unclear on some of it, like this:
Completion of one SUCCESSFUL NASA Advanced event (6 sessions over two days is considered as an event).
You may request observation at any NASA-VA HPDE event in the Advanced Group. Observation may be as simple as three successful observed sessions. You may then request a NASA Regional Provisional Race license.
What is an advanced event? HPDE?? Also it does not say how many HPDE I have to do or anything

depends on your previous experience, how quickly you learn, and how well you can control your car. could take as few as 3 events or as many as 20.
simon... hope to see you on track at a honda-challenge race

Karl, unfortunately, in the past the website doesnt have clear information on it. It looks fantastic now, right here:

Hell, you can even race with a NASCAR license!
boogety! (sp?)
Of course, you could have also gone to http://www.nasaproracing.com and read the CCR. And i know this information has been covered here before, i'm just too damn tired to search for it for you.
Something thats confusing though, is this:

This satisfies ALL of the NASA driver school requirements. You may submit paperwork for a NASA National License</TD></TR></TABLE>
I know of someone that was told this is not the case and is not acceptible to obtain a NASA license and race ECHC.

I have seen this written in this forum by a NASA official (I forget who... cobetto, grumpy, etc). It confused me because it contradicts what the HC info has always said.

Back to the original question... The situation, as I see it, is that you have to convince the right people with NASA that you're competent before being moved to advanced, and before being allowed to either attend the comp school or be observed for a race license.
The fact that this is very vague has been brought up by many, many people... especially the series that are trying to recruit new (i.e. rookie) racers. If you're in a hurry to race, it still seems like the quickest way to do it is to go get an SCCA license, then come back to NASA. There's no guarantee how quickly you can move up through the NASA HPDE program. Some instructors are looking to progress people on to the next group and some have probably never bumped a person EVER. I had one instructor that told me (at the end of a weekend) that he thought I should be moved up, but that it wasn't up to him. When I asked what that meant he couldn't explain - he didn't understand at all what the process was.
I think it would be a good idea for NASA to let people designate themselves as soon-to-be-racers -- put appropriate instructors with these people -- and make an effort to help them move to the comp school level as soon as their skills are up to it.

OK, I'll say it one more time...
NASA VA has been accepting completed SCCA Novice permits for the last 3 years. If this has changed, it'd be a really really really really good idea for someone who is a NASA official to announce this somewhere. The NASA websites, the HC websites, a billboard at Summit Point... SOMEWHERE.
People coming on H-T and saying "I think this " and "I thought someone said that" simply won't cut it.

Oh yeah.
Simon is a youngun'. 16 I think.
But he has more race time than many people on this board in the form of Karts. Theres no reason at all he should have to go through the HPDE process to get to a comp school. Thats just silly.
Note-> Warning.
If anyone even thinks of posting that racing karts isn't comparable to racing cars you are going to get a very early "******** of the year" award. There are wayyyyy too many current successful racers out there who went straight from karts to cars to even begin to list them.
So if you started having that thought, please, let it pass.

just downloaded the CCR and it says under
13.0 NASA PROVISIONAL LICENSE
.....
13.1.2 SCCA Regional Licensing program:
1. Submit a copy of their Novice Permit.
2. Submit a copy of their driver’s license.
3. Submit a copy of their Physical Examination Form.
4. Submit the appropriate fee.
.....
13.1.5 Provisional Licenses Completion:
Once a driver has been issued a Provisional License, he/she will only be allowed to compete in those events hosted by the Region of issuance. Each time a Provisional License holder completes a race without incident, he/she must obtain the signature of the Race Director, or his/her appointee. Once four races have been signed off, the Provisional License is complete, and may be submitted along with the other requirements as listed in the section “Issuance of s NASA Competition License” to obtain a Competition License.
Seems pretty clear to me. Which is good, because I still only have my Novice Permit (Novice License actually, since my school req's are completed) and I'm having to pay $55 to extend it. I can race up to 5 more SCCA races with it before being required to pay another $55 to make it an official Club Racing Regional License. And since I might not even do 5 SCCA races this year, I'll save money being able to transfer this to get my NASA/Honda Challenge license
