Default Is the Civic Dx bottom-end strong enough for a mini-me swap???

I was thinking of doing the mini-me swap to my 98 civic dx, but I was wondering if the bottom-end is strong enough to handle the higher revs of vtec. If it is strong enough, would it be able to handle a skunk2 stage 1 cam upgrade??

Any help is appreciated..

yes.... the bottom end of your y7 is basically the same as the y8, except the pistons have a lower volume dish (that's better).

and IMO, dont use the skunk2 cam, there are better SOHC cams out there for less money.

most SOHC bottom ends are good out to about 7800 rpm stock...beyond that i would use a bit of caution.

i wouldn't rev my y7 to 7800 even if i could

there is a reason why it has a rev limiter

hell even a y8 has a 7200 rev limit

don't get me wrong...... y7's aren't **** engines by any means. with the a y8 head, a1 pistions to bump that compression, y8 IM, i/h/e.......... it would be a pretty nice set-up

the rev limit is there for the head's protection, not the bottom end.

the A1 pistons may be a little extreme for a daily driver as the up the compression to ~12.6:1
i would recommend A6 pistons (~10.6:1 c/r) if he even wants to go for a full rebuild.

your compression will go up from ~9.2 to ~9.6 after the head swap due to the fact that the y7 pistons are less dished than y8, and the y8 head has a smaller combustion chamber volume than that of the y7 head.

stock y8 motors have been shown to make power out to 7800 rpm with the rev limiter removed, the bottom end held up fine. hell, my engine building buddy has witnessed 300+whp on a stock y8 bottom end... tuning is where it's at if you are that concerned about durability.

stick some 93 octane in there and you're good to go

didn't realize the a1 pistons would up the comp. that much. i figured it would on raise it to about ~11.1 or so

i thought i remembered someone on here with a1 pistons in their y7 or y8..... *shrugs*

yeah, the pm7 (a1) pistons have something like a 5 or 7cc dome, compared to a 3cc dish on the a6 pistons... just to give you an idea of the compression difference.

infinatenexus is running A1 pistons in his mini-me
93 octane helps definitely (god bless florida), but it helps to also retard your base ignition timing a couple of degrees to help the motor out on those hot and humid days.

Can you give me the names of a few better SOHC cams for less money?

EF-1, Exospeed, Crower, Comp Cams, and Delta Cams makes good regrinds for non-vtec motors, and there are a couple more out there... you may want to check out http://www.d-series.org for more information... it's a good site

YES

The 1.5L bottom ends have a better r/s ration than the 1.6L bottom ends. High R/S ratio = more reliable in the higher revs.

I my mini me
