Default ATS 3,4,5+JDM 4.785

Hi,

First of all Happy New Year to all of you !!

You have all been of great help and have provided me with great knowledge on my R.

I am interested in the ATS 3,4,5 gears for my 98 Spec R with the JDM 4.785 FD.

Is the ATS 3,4,5 gear kit different between the one for the 4.4 FD and the one for the 4.785 FD please?

i am asking because i am going to order these from japan and i have to be sure that i will be buying the correct kit for my car.

Also i have searched ....but do you think that these would compliment well my current list of mods for my car which is a weekend toy?

If my car could only do 109 I'd shoot myself

and shifting that many times just to go around a city block

I've got the stock USDM gearing with the ATS FD. I start in 2nd gear all the time and skip 4th gear too. I still get 26+ mpg in the city too. 109mph top speed would BLOW!!!

Ok guys ........

So what do you recommend me........

put the 4th and 5th 96 spec gears then........?

I rarely go above 180 kph (short roads here in malta !!) = 111.6 mph

I want my car that little bit faster with some gear tweaking........ i don't want to open up the engine for now.

agreed, you should look @ just the ATS FD instead...I think it would net near the same results, then you only have to install/buy it, no the remaining gears.

Here is a gear calc so you can check out the key differences.

You should probobly ask yourself why you want the 3,4,5 gear sets? Do you have trouble staying in high revs while shifting, or, whats the reasoning?

Im almost positive the ATS FD would accomplish the same result.

The ATS FD as you know is 4.9. The JDM is 4.785.

sooo.. just looking at the #'s. The 4.785+the 3,4,5 gear sets is going to be pretty much equivalent to just the 4.9.

However the 4.9 should net better accel in 1st/2nd gear, and the 4.785+the 3,4,5 gearseat *may* net better accel in those gears. (Im assuming the 3,4,5 gearset is more closley spaced than the OEM 3,4,5)

Keep in mind I haven't done much research on the 3,4,5 gearset, so I could be totally wrong here.

Did you try using the gear calc I posted?

I don't know what Malta is like and I'm too lazy and sleepy to check on Google for my own personal benefit.

for your 98spec R, depends on how much money you really want to spend and how far you are willing to go.

And also what you mean by a little faster or something in that respect you mentioned.

Change to the 3.4.5 gearset and a stock 4.400 final. You'll retain some highspeed while the short gears will make the car pull strong.

Otherwise, as I have always said and felt, the 4.9 was designed to be used with the 98spec R tranny as it had longer gears. But that's just my opinion.

Cusco also makes a 5.0 Final Drive if the ATS isn't agressive enough for you.

I ordered it a while back, but wait-time from overseas was unestimated, so I just ordered the ATS 4.929. I love my ATS.

I just got back from an 880 mile roadtrip @ 26mpg.
Average Cruising speed was about 80mph @ 5000rpms.

I have stock exhaust and upgraded speakers, so I really didn't find it annoying. If I had a loud of exhaust I'm sure it would have driven me crazy. Don't puss out and get an LS 5th gear like some people do.

Around town gas mileage is awesome too, I can cruise in 5th at low rpms and the gearing keeps the car easily driveable.

I've ridden in Ben's car and wow the ATS 4.929 is very nice. Pulls so hard for just an upgraded final drive.

If someone stocks the Cusco 5.0 I might buy that.

However I normally dont take my car past 100mph all that often. Maybe like once a month if that. I think I'd be able to live with the Full ATS gearing.

There are many misconceptions about the gearset.....

Here's a thread with some good information.

I know of precious few people running the gearset. And even fewer are using the gearset + 4.785 or 4.929 final drive.....

I believe Mike K did at one time run the 4.929 final WITH the 3,4,5 gearset. THAT was a crazy tranny.....

I will be using a 4.785 final with the ats 3,4,5 gearset and ATS lsd.....

I will post up driving impression when it is done.

Thanks a lot for all the info guys !!

i think i will go with the ATS 4.929 Final Drive.

As you said it will compliment well my current stock gear ratios.

I will try to check on the cusco 5.0 FD but i haven't found any info yet.

I was under the impression that the JDM 98 spec transmission already has the 4.785 final drive. If that's the case, you might find that the 4.929 isn't the improvement you're expecting as most reviewers have probably experienced a change from 4.4 -> 4.929.
