The ups and downs of a lightweight flywheel.
It seems the heavier flywheels are easier to launch consistently, due to their "floating" effect (ie: they don't drop down as fast) . But the light weight ones rev up much faster, and free up hp.
For straight road racing, get a light flywheel. For drag racing & normal driving, keep it heavy. You won't gain much top end in the 1/4 with a light flywheel, and you will likely end up running a tenth slower. A small 4 cylinder with a light flywheel has almost ZERO room between bogging off the line and burning up your tires and/or clutch when running the 1/4. You have more room with V8's (thanks to torque) but you will still probably be worse off as far as 60' time.
I switched from a stock B16 clutch and flywheel to a lightened stock flywheel (fully rotationally balanced, 12.5 lbs) and an ACT HD clutch with stock disc. No change in 1/4 time, speed, or 60' time. I launch higher now, though.
