my 97 civic ex allows the back end to pop up slightly and when i open it, it slides into the roof. not above like eclipses ( i think)

Same here. It can pop up for ventilation but when opened it slides into the roof.

96-00's should have "tilt" (rear pops up), or "open" (slides open underneath roof) as far as I know. 92-95's have "tilt", and "open" simply slides the moonroof glass back on top of the roof while in the "tilt" position (although my shop manual shows the 4dr. EX sunroof sliding under the roof like the 96-00's, I've never seen it in person).
Maybe you have an aftermarket sunroof if you bought the car used? If it's factory, it could be different but I dun see why... but you never know...

96-00 civics sun roofs back end pop up for ventilation but when open full they slide into the roof... 92-95 civics back end pop up also for ventilation but when open they slide up and over the roof .. they do not hideaway in the roof like 96-00
