Pretty off topic but I was driving the rex tonight pretty hard and was just wondering something.

I used to have a 93 EX coupe. I KNEW tec was kicking in, but could never physically hear it. This isnt the case on my Rex. I swapped in a Z6 a few weeks ago and tonight I was really listening and lo-and-behold @ 5200 (via fields controller) I can hear the tone of the RPM's change!!

How many of you that have swapped can actually hear tec kick in?

 

my engine tone changes a bit at 4400. its not as drastic as a B series though. first time i was in a B series car with vtec. when vtec kicked in it actually scared me. i like my vtec more thouhg the B series is too much noise and not enough power

 

What were the mods on the EX coupe and on the CRX? Intake really makes the sound more noticable.

 

I did take that into consideration. The EX was stock besides the drop-in filter. The crx on the other hand has I/E/H

 

i don't have a tach but i can here it engage. plus its when i start pulling on the other guy.

 

D16Z6 with light mods or no mods and the stock camshaft should be set to engage VTEC at 4800RPM.

The aftermarket intake is what amplifies the sound. Since you have an intake on your CRX, but you didn't on your EX coupe, that's why you're hearing it now.

I like the sound of my Y8 head when vtec hits. Nice tone change - deeper, meaner... But more bark than it's bite, that is, until I finish my Z6/Y8 project.

My sohc vtec was pretty quiet, even with an intake and exhaust. It only pulled a bit harder. My B16A is another story. Loud as fawk, and pulls like hell...

 

You guys think your single cams sound nice now, get a skunk 2 manifold. My engine tone totally changed when i put mine on my SOHC ZC, it seriously growls. Pulls really nice too, made a HUGE difference. I got i/h/e, the manifold and a Catco highflow cat and the thing pulls very nice.

 

I can't hear my D16Z6 kick into vtec.... Then again my D16Z6 has the spark plugs on the "wrong side" too, hehe...
