Motec lambda o2 meter? Anything comparable in accuracy, but less $?
Here's the product in question:

Now what will perform almost as accurately, but for less$?
Someone had poster an DIY electronics-kit version, a few weels ago.
I've heard of people tuning with the J&S knock meter output (just keep backing up till the knock level is deemed acceptable).
Other than that, maybe EGT.

Ed, I don't know a lot about the egt method. I think that's what jack uses. Unfortunately, my degrees are in English and Psychology so you EE guys sometimes get over my head...
I saw those specs and even have a hard copy in front of me, but they got a little too deep... The cost for that was ~$300 for parts and should be as accurate as the motec unit... But who will build one?
I'll IM you...

EGT -- exhaust gas temperature, basically you just want to make sure things don't get anywhere close to melting/detonating.
Yeah, that diagram of the DIY had me scratching my head too! hehe
Just go to the dyno that inclused a/f plots, since once you set it up things should be fine from then on.
Personally, tuning using the J&S (knock sensor) seems like an acceptable method since it gives you a direct feel for the limiting factor involved (just got to figure out how that correlated to the A/F dyno readings). later, ....ed

I guess the J&S idea sounds ok too... I'll look into that as well.
I'm not worried about dyno sessions, they have a wideband there.
But setting partial throttle fuel on the vafc, hondata, or power fc can only be done while driving around town...
That way I can get good mileage, and good power too.
.....the search continues.
