Sad but true - NYPD pulling people over for modified exhausts
Yep. I heard about this but I've haven't experienced it till now. I wasn't speeding nor even gunning it when I noticed the cop just slide behind me at a stop light. As soon as I made a turn, the lights went on and I pulled over.
The officer in question did state that he pulled me over because I didn't have a stock exhaust system. I replied to him that he was correct but what was the problem? Was it too loud? He couldn't say much since it wasn't loud. Tried to bug me about my "worn" tires but I stated that I did inspect them and it wasn't at the wear bars yet. I guess he didn't expect me to know what wear bars were because he got quiet.
Maybe they were bored. Maybe my car is a bit too bling now with the big ole shiny Fujitsubo muffler. But they bid me good night after checking my license and I wished them Happy Holidays. *shrug* Good thing I don't have a T1R bpipe/Spoon N1 combo anymore.
Anyway, just a heads up to anyone here living in NYC. Don't blame the cops, they're just doing their jobs. Be polite and hopefully they won't keep you from your destination.

Cops on foot pull over people along main street over the weekend all the time...mostly for tinted windows, loud exhaust and the first time visitors that were victimized by the no turn zones.
only now you guys r getting pulled over for modded exhausts in NYC?Man here on da left coast we been getting yanked over for that shiat in the early 90's
wow, they're just now doing it there?!i've been getting modified exhaust tickets here for about 6-7 years......
i've noticed they usually pull you over more for a big shiny tip than the sound unless it's just outrageously loud.
i have a 2.5" straight pipe on my coupe with a 3" tip painted flat black.it's pretty damn loud, but i never get pulled for it.my beater used to have a polished N1 style muffler with a 4" tip.it was only slightly louder than stock, and i used to get pulled for it all the time.painted it black, and i never did have another problem-even though it didn't get any quieter......
all the more reason to quit wasting money on bling exhausts and get some mandrel bends and an oval, stock looking muffler and fab something.same performance, way less money and hassle.
EG.replaced the black N1 muff(still too loud for dailey driver,i want QUIET!)now have an oval Dynomax:
coupe.i know the exhaust is about to fall off-had a bad experience with the driveway...welding up new hangers to tuck it up more over christmas

I got a get-it-fixed ticket w/ in 24hr. Freaking Hwy Patrol told me that I have to change my exhaust b/c its illegal. I replied back saying how is it illegal when I can go into a store and buy it. I have an N1 no cat.......crazy loud after vtec......I know
but I passed him at like 4rpm......after hitting vtec
Oh well, he went along gave me a ticket and told me to go to the nearest precinct to have another approved the change, if so the cop can write a letter to drop the ticket. So b4 I went I put my silencer, had a dillhole cop come outside to here my exhaust (**** was funny
) I convinced him that it's a louder sound w/ out the silencer........after all that he wrote the letter.......I sent the ticket plus letter to Albany and it was dropped
NYC cops can be A-holes at times but having a PBA helps alot more than u think.
I got away from a speeding ticket, he got me at 81mph in a 50 zone in the FDR.
He asked where my friend works at and left very angry....dunno why

Probably not
though..
I used to get pulled over regularly in my VW for my exhaust. Its nothing new to me.

It wasn't specifically your exhaust that you got pulled over for.
If a cop get's a suspicious feeling about your car he can pull you over for just about any excuse. In this case it was the exhaust.
I was pulled over by a cop once. He said he pulled me over because he ran my plates and it came back as an Acura Integra and I had Honda badges on my car.
"Acuras are just re-badged Hondas Officer" I said
"Yeah I know" said the officer
After that he advised me to put my front license plate on and sent me on my way.
This time it was my badges (which were stolen a week later), next time it could be my exhaust, or no front license plate, or whatever.

One cop pulled me over as I pretymuch idled by them, then gave me a bitch story about my exhaust "not gonna fly in NY state" and then gave me crap about my Azenis..."the tires look bald". He let me go on my way after checking my registration and license. Nice waste of my time and waste of his too.. but I hope it does not get worse next year!!!!

lol.. I guess I've been lucky. In the three years of driving my SI with N1 exhaust, I've never, ever been pulled over and bothered. I was pulled over this past summer in a nearby town and told by the rookie officer that I was pulled over due to my AEM liscense plate frame holder.. Nothing was mentioned about my "grapefruit launcher" APEXi N1 exhaust. lol..

And this getting pulled over in NYC more than usual, Bloomberg is clamping down on all the moneymakers in the city. Tickets are a big one, look at the price of a friggin parking ticket now, $105!!![got one, ouch]. As long as he can do his thing with the parking tickets, the other fines should stay the same. But him pressuring the departments to write tickets whenever possible isnt making it easier for us. I saw a guy getting a speeding ticket the other day on 8th ave. and he wasnt even going that fast..
You Californians better hope Arnold doesnt catch on to this, because then you guys will feel the Wraith of Bloomberg, and it aint fun

Yea man, for a while (still goes on sometimes) it's instant tow if you have any mods on you car. They'll just bullshit you with their "I think your car is illegally modified and is dangerous to the road", then comes the tow truck, even if your car is completely legal.

I was justed stopped here in MD the other night. Now I do admitt I have BC Spec 3 with a test pipe.
I have never been given a ticket before for "modified exhaust". Here in MD they always give u a "Repair Order" for the exhaust, which means you must go have a State Inspector sign off on the order that the exhuast is fixed. That is not hard b/c most to not care and will sign it anyway.
In my area they now stop you and do not give a "repair order" anymore. They give a Ticket for "illegal modification to exhaust" which is a $55 dollar fine. Anything to get the state some $. I did not know they can do this, I am told they have to give a repair order 1st. I am going to look into this and maybe greet this officer in court with some "news" he will not like.

may be different where you live, but here they're not obligated in any way to give a "fix-it" ticket...they can write you the first time you ever get pulled for it.you can try bringing proof(pics, maybe a receipt from an exhaust shop)to court to prove that you fixed/returned to stock the exhaust, but they usually don't care.the two times i actually went to court as opposed to pre-paying the ticket, the judge didn't care that i had fixed it(i used an old pic of my car when it still had the stock exhaust
)-he just asked "so was it illegal when you were pulled over?".of course the answer is yes.his reply was somethign along the lines of "well, you were written this ticket then, not now"....guilty
hopefully you'll have better luck

hopefully it's more well defined than here.the law here says you must have factory-like components(in our case a cat, resonator and muff)in the factory locations, and it must not be any louder than stock.you also can not modify the exhaust before the cat-so no aftermarket headers;although i have argued with an inspector over CARB-approved headers, but they still maintain that ANY aftermarket manifold/header is illegal.
weather or not the exhaust is louder than stock is up to the issueing officer.period.nowhere in the law does it define a specific Db level it can't exceed,or an ammount of DBs louder than stock it can be before being ilegal.when you get in court you can have documentation of the exhaust meeting certain sound level requirements or anything else-doesn't matter.the judge simply asks the cop if it is too loud,if he says yes then you're guilty...every time i get pulled over for it,i ask the cop how many of these he gives to Mustangs(around here you'd swear every Stang comes with factory Flowmasters and no cats),they always say not too many because they're muscle cars and can't help being loud!?never mind that they're NOT loud from the factory!i've had three different cops tell me that Hondas are economy cars with little 4-cylinder motors that shouldn't make any noise at all, therefor i deserve a ticket.
now i just smile, tell them they're a ******* idiot and go pay the ticket.accomplishes the same thing with much less effort.
