My ITR has never burned a drop of oil. After installing the new thermostat everything is running fine until I hit VTEC. It will drop out of VTEC only sometimes. So i figured it had something to do with oil pressure. I checked my oil and there was nothing on the stick! WTF?! i checked my garage for oil and there was nothing on the ground. I dont have any leaks. So that means my car is CONSUMING oil. Would me having installed a JDM DC and SMSP cat make my car burn more oil? This never started happening until i installed the header

 

Have you been spending a lot more time in VTEC lately?

P.S. ... as you might already know, it was dropping out of VTEC because of low oil pressure!

 

I have heard, but can't confirm, that the header's proximity to the oil pan heats the oil more than a stock exhaust. This in turn leads to higher oil consumption. Just a theory that may or may not explain the phenomenon.

 

its got enough oil to engage VTEC but not enough to increase the pressure in the higher rpms.

When was the last time you checked your oil before that?. It probably wasn't too recent because you would have noticed 4 quarts going out you exhaust pipe if it happend in a week. I'm surprised v-tec even worked at all with no oil, or even when you had a little oil. I dont think a header would make you run out of oil, I think you have something else to blame....

A dry dipstick is probbaly only 1-1.5 qts low, not then end of the world, but I would suggest you check the oil more often than you have been just for the motors sake.

 

hey man the same thing happened to me. when my gsr motor was stock it didnt burn any oil at all. even at 3000 miles it would still be full. after installing the dc jdm 4-1 header and a 2.5 inch test pipe i started losing oil. about 2 quarts every oil change the header is reallly really close to the oil pan. im thinking that theres not enough clearance between the oil pan and the header which in turn causes higher oil temperatures therefore leads to oil consumption. just a thought.

 

Just add oil and check more often.

 

ok i have added 2.2 quarts since this morning and havent driven the car since. The dipstick is showing the oil level is half way between low and full Im fixing to drive the car around, warm it up and look for blue/gray smoke, if i see it i know i have a problem.

how long has it been (how many miles?) since you checked your oil prior to this and was it full at that time?

 

2,500 miles ago roughly and it was completely full (and clean)

 

not good, you notice any oil inside where intake connects to throttle body? what type of oil are you using?

 

actually a little oil was in there now that you mention it...how could it get way up there? Quaker State 5w-30 peak performance

 

hmm.. do a compression test, this is from my boost experience.. its unlikely you're getting major blowby, that may only confirm condition of your compression rings, but it only takes minutes to do. also, look further for oil leaks/stains of oil.. around transmission, behind engine.. all of these things are easy to do.

 

Same here... not a drop till I installed a DC- 4-1, and SMSP CAT.
I'm willing to entertain the idea of the hotter oil pan thing.
I've heard some reduce or all together eliminate their oil burning problems with an oil cooler. -which follows the same theory.

The ITR has an oil cooler, the base you mount your oil filter on is watercooled. I'm not sure about other cars equipped with B-series engines

I believe 94-95 GSR's have oil coolers too.

 

i'm pretty sure a full synthetic (i.e. mobil1) will more then likely solve the problem. if not, fluidyne oil coolers aren't that much. i'd also goto 10-30 as 5-30 is probably way to thin for such hot temps.

This is why Spoon Sports tapes a sheet of exhaust wrap to that section of the oilpan. I myself, cannot confirm if this has helped reduce my oil consumption solely because my motor isn't that healthy to begin with oil ring wise.

.....But it sure makes the oil pan look nifty when I'm under the car.....
