Door glass replacement? DIY possible?
1991 Integra RS - 2-door
I just had my drivers-side door glass shattered by a would-be thief. I'm getting estimates of about $240+ to replace the glass. But now I'm wondering if I could replace it myself and save some $$$. Has anyone ever done it before. Is it possible for a DIY'er?
Thanks in advance!

Stupid question I'm sure, but what are "helms"?
Thanks.

It's the HOLY BIBLE to modding your car. http://www.helminc.com Tells you everything.
A little expensive to some, but well worth having a hardcopy over the illegal online copy. Think of it like the ultimate lego manual for hondas. It's that awesome.

Well, a helms is the official Honda repair manual.
Chilton and haynes suck.
Get a helms on ebay.
I replaced the door glass on my 1G CRX, it wasn't that hard, maybe an hour or 2 for the whole thing. Just take your time, go slow. and do it right.
Remove window crank, etc. inner door release. Door panel screws then the clips. Speaker covers. Water sealing sheet( don't rip it). Glass mounting bolts. Slide new glass in. Rverse of above

Cool. $60 isn't too bad for a great manual. Unfortunately, I'll need to take care of the glass before I can get my hand on the manual.... it's cold and wet here in Seattle.
One of the glass shops that I talked to said that aftermarket glass would need to be drilled (?), and bonded to the door mechanism somehow. And then adjusted a ton of ways in order to get it right. Are they making it sound worse than it is.
I got a new quote for about $220 including installation. Sounds expensive to me, but I still don't know how difficult of a job it is.
Thanks.

Me personally, I'd get the glass from Honda. That way you know it fits.
No cutting or drilling. And I believe there are 2 nylon bushings pressed into the original glass that you need to have.
And I do believe the glass needs to be adjusted for fit after install, yes.

Okay, I've found salvage glass locally for $75. Not bad, I guess. Still, I'm nervous about the install. The Acura dealer said it's a pain in the ***, and an auto glass place told me it's not easy on these cars. Maybe they're just trying to scare me into getting it done by them???
Thanks.

They're just trying to scare you. Stealership labor rate per hour is around $75 an hour. If you get the Helms read it and you aren't a total idiot. I'm sure you can figure it out.
Workin on cars isnt rocket science. Just read up on it and take your time. Worst thing comes to serve, you'll post another thread asking how to do something. Which is better than spending hella money. IMO
Thanks.

Definitely very easy job. For a window replacement, you probably don't even need any sort of Helms manual at all. After removing the door panel:
Inner door handle has a screw
Screw at front of panel (in plain view)
Screw inside little "cup" where you grab to close your door
Pull the panel outward from the bottom (just pull hard, it won't break) and pull the entire panel up and back toward the back of the door. It'll come out. Remember there are wires in there connecting the door locks/window controls. Disconnect them, and that's it.
You'll see the window assembly there. Remove what screws you need to and everything's basically a common sense thing. Give it a try. And if you need help, post on here, we'll be glad to help.

you should be able to find the glass itself for 75-100 at a junkyard, and yes, installation is easy. like everyone else said pop off the door panel, and there are 4 bolts holding the glass to the motor arms. you just have make sure the glass is at a certain height so you can reach all 4 bolts.
