Troubleshoot: Cooling problem - temperature dropping
I was going back to a friends house when I decided to open her up a bit (haven't hit VTEC in two weeks). I redlined 2nd, hit 3rd and my temp gauge started dropping very rapidly. The car then bogged around 7,500 rpms. I turned around and again it happened through 2nd and 3rd gear. The car was completely warmed up. Im thinking i need to get the thermostat replaced, any one ever experienced this before? Any suggestions?
ok round two. I was driving home on the interstate going about 80mph. I dropped it into 4th and the temp gauge immediately drops to half way between normal and cold, then drops lower and at around 7,500 rpms rises back to half way between cold and normal. VTEC worked fine. So i get off the interstate and get onto a decently long stretch of road. I hit 2nd and it drops but stays in VTEC, hit 3rd and it doesnt move from 7,000 rpms and VTEC does not engage.
So i try turning the heat off and put the temp on cool. I drop it into 2nd gear and the temp fluctuates but doesnt drop below half way between cold and normal. But then the weirdest thing happens, my car starts making this popping noise. It sounded like i disengaged VTEC very quickly and then re-engaged again, temp was high enough for VTEC to engage though. This **** is starting to scare me. I hope its JUST the thermostat.

is the thermo located under the dist. or is it the other hose? I tried to take it off but it seems stuck, the hose i mean. Im going outside now, BRB
BTW the temp only fluctuates when in VTEC, below 5,800 everything is normal

It's the other hose. Looking at the top of your motor, it's directly to the left of the intake runners. Should also have a sensor in the t-stat housing. HTH

well i got the thermostat off. It looks perfectly fine. I do now need a mop to get all of the coolant off the ground! it poured out like niagra falls.
Im praying its not a sensor, that would really suck. Anyone know the price of a new thermo and some coolant? How many parts water do i need to mix in with the coolant?

You're in Macon, damn that sucks.
Anyways just go to Autozone and get a 180 degree thermo. Think its' like 5-10 bucks. Coolant is cheap too. Either get it from the dealership or get the over the counter stuff. 50/50 mix is recommended unless it's premixed.

ok went to the dealership this morning and picked up a new thermo and coolant. I drained the radiator and tried to remove the drain bolt from the block but i couldnt get it off. I figured that most of the coolant drained out of the block anyways since when i took the thermo out it drained out of the block anyway. So I start the car and warm it up. Everything seems fine until i start driving it. My heater is blowing cold air, WTF? Then temp shot up to half way between normal and hot so i pulled back in my driveway and turned the car off. I let it sit for a minute and then restarted the car. NOW ITS COLD? WTF? So i decide to give in and take it to the Acura dealership. Im driving out of the neighborhood and the temp shoots back up, so i put it in neutral and it goes back down. I hit the interstate and my heat starts working and temp is normal. I pull into the dealership and sit there for a minute waiting for the temp to shoot up...it never did. So i am having them check it out. I figure its just air in the cooling system. Anyone have any hypotisis on this?
It's likely air in the system, check your coolant overflow, it's likely not full anymore. Continue to make sure it's at the appropriate level and when your car cools add some coolant/water to your radiator.

yea i would say it was the thermo also....... i just replaced mine b/c it was doing the same ****. i was driving and right in the middle of 3rd vtec cut out b/c it cooled down too much and i was like WTF?! so thats my thoughts
