Default itr problems.. need help n suggestions on possible problems..

just recently picked up an act clutch hd/ss with a prolite flywheel 9lbs. now after getting the clutch installed.. i smell burned rubber or some kind or burned smell, and no ..I am not riding the clutch..llllllllllllll so i asked the guy who installed it and he said that its normal for the clutch to break in that's why i smell the burned rubber.. and no it isn't my tires because i do check. now today i was cruising down the expressway....just regular driving on 5th gear, and all the sudden it popped out of gear into neutral. first i thought i might have contributed something.. either pushed it or touched by accident.. so i put it bacxk into 5th gear.... after a minute or two..it pops back out again and this time witha lil grind..but i quickly put it back into 5th and held it with my hand...testing it.. a couple of minutes again later it tries to go into neutral..without hesitation i step on the clutch and put into neutral and then shifting it back to fifth. basically i had to ride my car home by putting it into fifth for a couple of mins. then neutral and letting ride out.. then put it back again to fifth.. any suggestions on what it might be or what could be causing the problem? i asked around and someone said it might be my shift linkage since we just finished installing the clutch.. the clutch was installed last week and never had problems with it until now. thanks i hope you gurus can help me out...

Sounds like the guy who did your clutch forgot to put fluid in the tranny, or at least fill it. Don't drive the car until you get it checked out!

Ok- first of all you don't necessarily have to take the tranny fluid out to change the clutch (although it's not a bad idea, and you should change it ever 20,000 if you do any "real" driving) Check your tranny fluid and make sure it's up to the right level so you don't toast it.

I suspect the cluprit here is that your pedal freeplay needs to be adjusted. If the freeplay is set too tight, the slave cylinder thinks you're partially depressing the clutch (hence the burning smell- 'cause it's slipping), as well as the popping out of gear. There should be a 10mm bolt with a jam nut near where your clutch pedal meets the slave cylinder. I can't swear to it (because I've only adjusted Nissans and Mitsubishis) but I doubt a Honda is much different.

The mechanic could also not have properly bled the system (which wouldn't cause this problem, but no harm in checking it while you're getting dirty)

Otherwise, you might have bad 5th gear synchros (like my old 89 Accord had), which grenaded the transmission one night on I-85 in Salisbury, NC.

So first check the fluid level, then check the freeplay, then bleed the system. Also- next time you change the tranny fluid, you might want to have a magnetic drain plug on hand to replace your original one. That will help show signs of premature transmission wear.

Good luck...

well i actually watched him bleed the radiator fluid, and transmission fluid. we replaced the fluid with honda transmission fluid. again from your suggestions it might be the clutch master cylinder needing adjustment. i just hope my new clutch isn't toast yet anyone in the area wanna help me out and see whats up with it?

thanks for the input guys.. took the r to the shop today and they lifted it up.. and yes it was indeed the clutch master cylinder... there was absolutely or almost no "free play" on it. which could be the cause of the fifth gear popping back into neutral. when we lifted the car up.. the whole passenger side, shift linkage, and cat was wet from we believe tranny fluid. we looked around and found that one of the seals of the drivers side axle was not aligned properly causing it to leak. hopefully i haven't burned the clutch out yet, only had it for a week on the car and only drove the car fo four days. but need advice on what you guys think? you think the clutch is gone? or already been damaged? just asking. but thanks for the input hopefully everything will go through ok and have it out of the shop in no time.

The clutch MC has zero to do with it popping out of gear. I mean, its not like it pops out of gear when you push the clutch in! Call the guy who worked on the car. He worked on your car, it isnt right, so its his responsibility.
