JL W7 subs are all that and then some. You're not paying for the name on the subs, you're paying for the quality and design put into them. Yes there are cheaper subs out there that people love to compare them to, but it's always an SPL application they compare them in.

The W7 was not meant for SPL. It was designed to get loud and still sound good unlike the one hit wonders you see playing in the DB drag and other SPL comps. Go for it! And if money is an issue, you need to buy a single W7 10 in the H.O. enclosure and put either the JL 500.1, RF 500.2, or the JL 1000D, or the RF BD1000.

personally I agree that the W7 is a great sub....

but you can buy a sub that will do the same job, be just as loud, and have just as good of sound quality, for less money

i owned a jl audio 10w7 in a ported enclosure (made by vteg on this board) with a 500/1 monoblock jl audio amp.

thing was spectacular for 1 10 inch sub..even tho it's really 10.5 inches.. and the sub was really pushing out a lil over 600 watts..the thing slammed. everyone thought i had 2 12's or 2 15's and the SQL was great considering how much damn spl it pushed out. ask vteg, he heard it.

til this day i have never heard a sub with such low distortion before. i like it more than the idmax and that's saying a lot.

in terms of SQ (not what sounds good to your ears, big difference), the W7 is top notch. if you can afford it, go for it. there are alternatives at a price a tad cheaper, but as far as wide range of SPL and SQ, the W7 has them beat.

Are you building your own box? How much space are you willing to give up?

Either of those combinations you listed will give enough spl to satisfy most. When dealing with expensive woofers you want a box that will make them shine. So you should look at how much space you can give up to a box. Sealed or ported. And then determine what woofer combination can fit.

i have a 2000 gsr hatch and the ported box for the 10w7 took up like 60-70 percent of my trunk i would say.

one 12''

i would guess with almost any honda, you won't have the airspace for two 10"s.
w7's are meant to play loud with VERY little distortion.

The JL W7s are a superior subwoofer. JL enginered this sub to be a sound quality sub. They also have many patented technology when developing this subwoofer that no other brand can even use (without getting sued of course). It is an extremely accurate subwoofer. So if you hear distortion coming out of the sub its not the sub, its your amp, eq, deck, etc. Also has the ability to have huge spl using up very little space. I have had first hand experiance with all w7's, you can not go wrong using them, but you need a clean amp with lots of power to run them.

i was told the more efficient a sub is, the more airspace it can push. maybe you mean they work great in smaller enclosures too?

Our shops hummer has one, yes one jl13w7, and i can throw anything at the sub and it wont even break a sweat!!! still sounds nice and clean, and we are pushing it with a jl 1000 watt amp. its alot louder and cleaner than a few other hummers and bigger trucks we have come across set up with 2 or 3 subs. This sub shines if its set up right.

if i can fit it, im putting one in my civic

i have an gsr. i'll just go with one 12''. i don't want to give up most of my trunk space. is there a general rule with how big a box should be. i'm not sure what i need to know for me to pick between sealed or ported.

The jl's can work in small spaces, but they shine in large enclosures. The more efficient a subwoofer is in the subbass range, the bigger enclosure it will need. Off the top of my head I would guess 3 cubes and 40 square inches or port for ported, or 2 cubes for sealed box for that sub. Go to jl's site to see what they recommend, and then do some models with the t/s parameters.

If you want some trunk space go with a ported 10 or a sealed 12 w7.

Here is a blast from the past. Evol's old box

i would suggest to get a 12w6v2 and use a 500.1 jl amp.. that would be a better match then the 10w7 persay with the 500.1 jl amp.. and remember theres always small thumb of rules when you use different boxes.. as in the amp settings...the manual usually tells you so..such as db octave and cross over freq. in a ported in a closed trunk or a ported in a open trunk and a sealed in a closed trunk and sealed in a open trunk but for the money the W6 is lets say a little under 2/3 of the performance of the w7...

that box is too big. i probably spend the extra and get a custom box. anyone put a custom box against the back of the trunk? is there any problems with putting one there.

the only problem i [have not yet] seemed to face is accessing the spare tire

...and of course limited trunk space.

i'm still very thankful my car hasn't been f**ked with by any ba$tard-a$$ thieves.

You have to pay to play. You will either have to use lots of power and inefficient install, or in evols case fairly large box and not much power from the 500/1.

That install was probably the loudest single 10 I have heard to date. I don't hear very many loud ten's though

PS, if you want small box. Seal it. You can probably put a 10 in less than one cube.

That is possible. The box could be wider since it is not between the wheel wells.
