Default Battery Relocation/Wiring Q's

Ok, my battery is relocated and has been since I bought the car. Optima RedTop, alternator and battery are good. At lights, you can see my lights dim, and when I rev to go they brighten up a bit. Also, if I turn my highbeams on sometimes the cd player turns off, a symptom of unsufficient power. The ground is kinda shitty, and the wire is 8 guage! I am gonna ground it right to frame tomorrow, and replace the wire and terminal. I know they sell stranded copper wire at Lowes and HomeDepot, whats the difference between this and the expensive stuff at the stereo shop? They want close to 40 bucks for 20 feet of 2 guage, whereas at home depot it is 15 or 20. Any ideas/experiences?

if i were you id just get the battery cable kit from summit for 25 bucks: http://store.summitracing.com/...1220A

comes w/ terminals and all. im using thier whole kit and havent had any problems.

if it doesnt have one already id install an inline fuse or circuit breaker in the power line. i used a fused distribution block i bought at a stereo shop similiar to the one they have here http://www.homemadeturbo.com/t...P.jpg but it has 2 fuses

Don't know exactly.. But in allot of cases assuming the number and size of each strand is pretty much the same it would have to do with the rating of the outer sheathing for AUTO; vs. inside the walls of your home or buried in the ground may be different. Oil, Gas, resistance, etc. Another consideration may be UV protection, and abrasion resistance.

I haven’t checked into it in detail.. Most people use welding cables. Try a Welding supply shop.

I’d think for the most part all things being equal would be the stereo stuff comes in all different colors over welding cables, which are usually black.

Where should the fuse be? Close as possible to the battery correct?

the ground wire should be no longer than 3 feet and its good to have the fuse close to the battery but i also put one under the hood that way when i work on the car i can just pull the fuse out.

I relocated my battery and had the same prob. It's fixed now. Here's what I did:
First off change ALL ur grounds. I went from one ground connected to battery to 6 and within the engine compartment 4 extras from body to engine. Make sure ur alternator is efficient because when u have battery in teh back it places more stress on ur alt

Change ur terminals as well. Right now I have gold plated terminals. Ur main issue is to make everything flow smoothly with the least amt of resistence.

Oh yeah and the diff between homedepot wires and say PG audio wires is the resistence. Oxygen free cables conduct hella lot better.

Yeah, Kingston for about another two weeks! I originally went to Hammer, and they were the expensive ones. Guess I'll have to bite the bullet, only problem is that they don't have it in stock right now so I would have to settle for 4 guage or wait. I don't wanna wait and mess something up though.
