starting at bottom, going up
1st - reverse (with straight cut gear) - 2nd - 3rd - 4th -5th

well on Honda car, the reverse is not synchronized, so if the car is mooving a bit and you'r trying to engage the reverse... you'll end up making some metal shave...
that's about it
Kranked,
btw... your 5th gear shifting fork ( the part's that is in the ring ) is broken, and yes this is bad... change it while your at it...
see ya

Looks like your 5th gear selector fork has a busted off piece, and said piece got all ground up in the tranny. If you're lucky, you can clean everything good, get a new shift fork, and be on your way.

Maybe I'm reading this wrong, but it kinda sounds like you think the reverse gear teeth are supposed to be cut like the forward gears (/////). Reverse is a straight cut gear like they said above (|||||). So it didn't actually wear from ///// to |||||. All the metal is probably from the broken shift fork that got eaten up in the tranny. That should be all you need to replace, not reverse.
