Default Transmission fuild change and Timing belt change

Hi guys,

searched with "transmission" and "oil" and didn't seem to find anything, so any help would be good

My friend got a 97 ITR with 64k miles on it. beeing seeking for some shop doing the timing belt and possibly doing the transmission fuild by our selves.

Now the question is what do we have to watch out about the timing belt stuff? Since it's an ITR, does it mean it has a different timing then GSR?? we are in a smaller town that a lot of ppl does not know what an ITR is

As for transmission fuild, is it okay that we change ourselves? It got a LSD build in, does that mean we need to use different fuild? Or it's actually two different area that need two different fuild? Or is it cheaper for the transmission shop to do it? Any brand of transmission fuild is good or the OEM one is actually good enuf?

Or any website that has a lot of tech stuff for the ITR?? I owned a 300zx and there are tons of website about how to change LSD, trans fuild, check engine problem, etc but I am not sure about ITR.

We used to go to dealer and do all the stuff until one day they screwed things up. I've noticed that a lot of 97 or 98 Integra has a bit problem on the passenger side's door(it closes good, but it seems it's out of alignment??) so we went to the dealer. after a day, we got the car back and we still feel it's done wrong so we went to a local body shop(which became my friend's work place later on). Guess what, the local body shop told us that dealer only loosen the screws up and did nothing on the door alignment which scared my friend and also think all the money wasted to the dealer...

So now the thing is whether we go back to dealer and get the timing belt done or any precaution that we need to ask if we are going to take to local shops to do?

Thanks for the help

I have changed my Timing belt on my coupe, but I don't see how it would be so different on a ITR. You basically need to do a lot of work to remove and put on the new one. If you plan on doing it yourself, get somebody that knows what they are doing to help you out

As for transmission, it will be much more dificult to do then timing belt, but like I said, get somebody that is good with Honda's to help you out

Here's a link to a good how-to tech site http://www.c-speedracing.com/howto.php . You will find a Helms useful, or at least a Haynes for no other reason than to get the torque values correct.

thanks for the website info.

one thing on the timing belt, it mentioned on the site that later models of honda and acura will need to change the timing belt every 90k miles, does that mean the year 97 model is an earlier model then? kinda confused there

I'd do it yourself. I know it seems kinda scary messing with the timing belt, but its not that hard and you can check it before you start it. If the crank is TDC and the cam gears are as well you know your right. Torque the tensioner and your set. Be sure to replace the water pump while your in there.

You just have to loosen the engine mount, take off the accessory belts, and remove the crank pulley. The belts and engine mounts are easy. It took me a little fiddling to figure out how to loosen the alternator, but nothing major. For the crank pulley bolt remove the lower flywheel cover, jam a screwdriver to keep the crank from turning, then use a long breaker bar and its a snap. Water pump is easy, just un-bolts right out.

My biggest deal was worrying about getting the timing lined up, because my cam gears didn't seem to be EXACTLY lined up, but I found out thats normal.

Where are you at?

TBelt is not that hard. A little time consuming but not really hard. The tranny fluid is simple.

And use a Honda OEM, Toda or PE belt. (IMO)

trans fluid is easy. use honda manual trans fluid. i doubt they have a seperate one for the type R's but double check. to drain the trans fluid you need a 3/8 ratchet and some time of pump that you can pump the fluid into the drain hole. pick up a helms manual and itll walk you through it.
