sorry to hear that i had the same problem.. it was becuase i had this crooked position of my elbow and usually when i race i slam it into gears like a maniac lol!
anyhow.. i never went straight from going into 4th to 2nd.. usually for some reason it wouldnt go into 4th.. then in that split second i just try to get it anyways and ended up in 2nd.. this happened to me twice in my hatch about a year ago.. with my GSR motor runing down the track and once on the street when i had the ITR motor.. both times redline in 3rd and nothing ever happened.. i guess luck..

i think it all came down to me being nervous when i'm running up against someone.. now i'm much more realxed and its all good..

I agree - sounds to me like you're moving the shift lever in the wrong direction. Maybe you're trying to shift quickly in some street racing? Get to know your shift pattern (including that neutral position in the middle) and be careful to slide it in the right direction when you shift.

pretend that the shift **** is a raw egg, be gentle with it, don't manhandle the damn thing.

The ITR gearbox is incredibly sweet, you just need a light flick of the wrist to run through the gears.

I'm sorry to say that I think this is not the cars faults, remember that the flesh-colored thing in the drivers seat is the most important component.

Man, I hope I never have that problem. The only time that would happen to me is if I forgot when gear I was in.

no offense, but many people don't think shifting a stick properly is a technique or a skill. It does take time to practice and to learn the proper way of shifting. I assume that you some bad habits when shifting or an improper holding shifting position. There is nothing wrong with the car, but you really have to learn how to shift.

Never had that problem, and I had only driven sporadic truck stick before I bought my R.

I agree with the folks above, just be gentle, and use your wrist more than your arm. I don't see how you can be pulling it into second from third, unless you are indeed pulling to the side in a direction towards your body while you are shifting. Definitely get your elbow on the arm rest and have your arm out in that alignment while you are shifting. That might help.

Good luck! Be careful!

Never happened to me either, but my friend blew his motor by doing the same thing in his hatch this summer. I think people just try to shift too fast, better to sacrafice a little shift speed to be smooth.

None of you guys would be laughing if any of this **** happened to you! They are right though, you need to try to position your arm a different way. You might even look at the way you have your hand on the shift **** to. I did the same thing back in June and it cost me $950 to get my car fixed. I now pay more attention when I shift. I went from 3rd to 2nd at about 70mph ( going to 4th) and didn't even feel it go into 2nd. The shifter, IMO is damn near perfect and it does not take much to get it in gear. BTW, is it getting covered, or is it coming out of your own pocket? Sorry to hear about it happening twice.

I don't see anyone laughing or making fun. All of the responses above seem to be serious and helpful in their intent. In fact, this is one of the most mature and well-considered responses to a novice-type question that I've seen on this board. Kudos to all concerned.

When you mistakenly go from 4th to 2nd, and begin to let up the clutch, you'll feel the sudden deceleration of the clutch slowing the car down, as the engine speed tried to catch up with the road speed for that gear....this is your warning that you're in the wrong gear. You must've simply dumped the clutch for the revs to go up high enough to bend valves. Until you have more practice behind the wheel of a stick, pay attention to this...it'll save future valves.

Try turning your hand over with your knuckles facing toward you. I heard that helps some drivers.

Learn to shift SLOOOWLY & let out the clutch SLOOOWLY, until you can recognize what gear you are in.

The ITR shifter is much tighther than most mortal cars. A buddy that worked at Acura told me it was a common occurance. I think they will warrenty it once, but then you've been warned. They will probably attribute it to draggin.

Double clutch on the downshift. Should solve the problem completely.

How do you figure that? BTW, he was trying to upshift, not downshift. He just misshifted. Double declutching won't help overrevving...

The topic is 4th to 2nd gear. Shifting from 4th to 2nd would mean pushing the shifter up, to the left, then back down...... are U guys talking maybe 3rd to 2nd accidentally, on an upshift, or like 5th to 2nd on a downshift or something? U shouldn't really f*ck up a 4th to 2nd shift, because you'd be doing it intentionally. It's skipping a gear.

If you guys are missing 4th gear, go and check that your shift linkages are straight. Bent linkages can make it difficult to get it into the correct gear.

You're right... My bad... It's going 3-2 when the original intent was to get into 4th. It could be shift linkages, but I think most of us will do it in the heat of a drag race or something. It's just bad shifting. Sometimes, you just shift as fast as you can, your arm tenses up and jam it into 2nd instead of 4th. It's never happend to me again, so it was an isolated shift incident.

When it happens often, either you suck at shifting or something's wrong with your shift linkages, transmission.
