Drag application Rollbar - can anyone answer quick ?s
I'm taking my first crack at some rollbar work on my car. I don't have alot of experience with rollcages but I have been searcing through archives and veiwing cage mounting pictures. Unfortunatly I have some questions and I still can't find any info about them. Heck they are probably trivial or common knowlege, I don't know.
1995 Civic hatch - 6 point roll bar set-up, mainly geared for drag strip use
Does the main hoop have any specs reguarding mouting angle? Does it have to mount "plumb" 90degrees strait up or is there a degree of ange that it can be raked back?
Sanction rulebooks state that the cage has to be designed to prevent forward collapse of the main hoop (rules out forward rake) but says nothing about rearward collapse. Am I looking at this too close, is it not that big of a deal as long as the hoop fits the vertical and horizontal clearances with the hemet?
Any suggestions would help greatly. I figured this forum would have the people best to ask in it. I just don't want to TIG this in and find out later that it is incorrect/unsafe.....

if you click on my sig, and check out pics of my cage it might help you. i believe mine is slightly raked back to follow the lines of the b pillar.
My sources tell me that 15 degrees is the absolute maximum rake that is usually accepted. They prefer it be kept under 10 degrees.
Excellent, thanks for the info guys. That is what I have been doing the last few days is looking over pics and reading to see if anyone has mentioned the rear rake before. I was not having much luck, pics are great but sometimes point of view angles decieve what is really going on. I'll have to check out your pictures also 2.2Lcivic.
Thank you very much, I'm now closer to getting this cage done.

I didnt know about the 10-15 degree for the hoop. But when installing mine you pretty much need it to be angled back a bit so that you could weld around the bottom of the hoop to get the top of the hoop to sit back far enough to leave room so that your helmet doesnt come into contact with it.
Here is a pic of my hoop. More can be found here

To add. I havent had a chance to have my cage certified yet. The NHRA rule book has been addressed and followed during the installation of my cage though.

Plus you can see my picture!! I just got a nice angle locator from snap on to check future cage installations for this. Here is a pic of it. It has a groove cut in one side for laying it parallel to the length of a pipe and the other side is magnetic for flat surfaces

i see theres a couple ppl online now and im sure ive read it in the NHRA manual. my memory seems to have failed me. so my question is for 11.99 and faster is the roll bar required to b welded in or can it b bolted in???
they can be bolted, the plates have to sandwich the floor. So you need a plate on top and bottom and you have to use at least 4, 3/8"bolts.
