you'll need a roll bar with a harness bar, otherwise it's not safe to mount them.

Np, but no matter how long you get them, there will be no true safe way of mounting them unless you have a roll bar or cage that has a properly designed harness bar in there. The harnesses cannot go above or below a certain angle from the should line. Deviations from this will result in the belts being ineffective in an accident. The factory 3 points are safer for daily use as they allow mov't for you to check blind spots and trust me, are adequite enough in a roll over down a 700 yard drop cliff.

I would unless you don't want to sacrifice the bling factor for safety.

Are you reffering to the s2k in the movie that rolls off the mountain? And is the rolled s2k in that one current thread the same one as in the movie? I heard they didnt survive...

FYI- you want the belts slightly lower than 90 degrees from your shoulders to the point where they are mounted. Otherwise, if they are too low, either the seat will give way and break your back, or you will get spinal compression. However, with the roll hoops, it seems that the harnesses would be safer in a rollover situation, that is ofcourse assuming the hoops work, otherwise you will be decapitated.

if you're referring to the one that was on a s2k run, they did surivive and only had cuts and scrapes. They were driving top down.

no no no! lower than 90 degrees is incorrect! Please review the following, taken from http://www.timskelton.com website:

The shoulder strap mounting is the real issue. It is difficult to reconcile the various sanctioning body rules. Note that the stock belts would be fine for most classes, but when a harness is added, it usually must comply with the rules for the full cage classes. A sampling of the various rules follows:

From the Detroit Council of Sports Car Clubs rules:

Shoulder belt mounts must be located so that the belt leaves the top of the shoulder at an angle of not more than 25 degrees below the horizontal (horizontal or higher is preferred). A low mount will generate compressive forces in the spine during impact, which could cause injuries. Where shoulder belts are mounted to a roll bar, the mount should be designed to minimize the likelihood of cutting the belt during a rollover.

All belts must be located on either a factory stock mounting location or to a secure mount in the frame, body or roll bar/cage structure. Mounts to sheet metal must be suitably reinforced to prevent pullout. . . .

From the BMW CCA Club Racing rules:

5 or 6 point 3" competition harness (with 2" sub belt), no more than five years old and meeting SFI-16.1 standards, properly mounted, are required. Harness cannot be mounted to the seat or seat rail. Mounting must be to the chassis backed by large diameter washers or to the roll bar. No two harness straps can be attached to a single mounting bolt. No Y-type shoulder harnesses are allowed. The angle of the shoulder harness cannot be above nor exceed 40 degrees below the horizontal plane of the shoulders.

Modifications to or replacement of the driverÂ’s seat may be necessary to meet this requirement. If the height or width of the seat back prevents the shoulder harness straps from remaining securely on the shoulders in all situations, the seat must be modified to remedy this condition.

From the Big Bend Open Road Race rules for modified classes (stock belts okay for stock classes):

If a Sternum Belt system is used the Lap belt must be placed in the proper position at the pelvis and the Anti-submarine belt must be used to keep the lap belt down and in the proper position.

a. The use of large "buckles" for the Sternum belt is not recommended.

2. Mounting Points must be at, or on, the Roll Cage, frame member or body panel.

a. The recommended shoulder belt mounting point height is no more than 2"(+/-) of the driverÂ’s shoulder when seated in a driving position.

b. Shoulder harness should be attached to the horizontal brace of the Roll Bar whenever possible.

c. The belts should be mounted in such a way so as not to cause undue spinal compression.

d. If mounted to the body panel, adequate spreader plates or large spreader washers should be used.

dkim - just so you know those rules are put in place for safety reasons. otherwise, you are risking a big IF, even though it is a big one. point being, if your car flips, the only "give" is your noggin since it is straight up from being forced back with your bling-harness.

I think you missed read what I meant, or it came out wrong. The point at which the belt should be mounted should be slightly less than a 90 angle from the seat back. So that the belt comes out of the seat, it should run nearly horizontally to the mounting point. We mean the same thing.

anytime. nowadays, I dunno whether to tell some guy at a car show that he could get seriously hurt b/c of the way he has mounted his harnesses or not tell him at all b/c I've talked to in a super friendly mannor to a few and they told me I was smoking crack. Oh well.
