Transmission rebuild question
My CRX has developed a bearing noise that I believe is the transmission mainshaft. It makes noise when ideling in neutral with the clutch out and stops when the clutch is depressed. I can hear it when in first and faintly in second. I cannot hear any of the bearing noise when in third, fourth and fifth. This is what leads me to believe it is the mainshaft bearing on the 1-2 end of the shaft i.e the clutch end. Are there any transmission experts out there that can tell me what else to watch out for? I intend to dismantle the 1-2 syncro and check its bearing in addition to the main bearings. Is there any thing else that may cause the above described noise?

I suggestion to you, is just to find a decent shape tranny at a junk yard. If you have the tools/energy/ambition, you should be able to find one at a u-pull it yard for less than a hundred bucks. That tranny will probably last a few years making that noise if you dont beat on it. For the price in new bearings/synchros, just get a new tranny.
Ever consider the throwout bearing? Mine is going on my 1st gen....I'm trying to finish the race season before i yank it, hopefully to swap in an LSD equipped tranny.

I don't think it is the throwout bearing because it stops making noise with the clutch depressed. This is when the throwout bearing is loaded and spinning. I have priced the transmission bearings and they are definitely cheaper than getting an unknown transmission from a bone yard. They are about $15-$20 each and if I replace all ot them it only amounts to about $100. If I have to get a new transmission, what model cars have the same ratios as my 87 CRX Si?
I have studied the power flow thru the transmission in my factory manual and come to the conclusion that the front bearing on the mainshaft is loaded the highest when in first and second. When in third and fourth most of the load is on the rear bearing and when in fifth the front bearing has virtually no load because the fifth gear is outboard of the rear bearing and has a third bearing on the other side.

I have the same noise in my 89 Civic occuring at the same time. I think its the mainshaft bearing as well and will be swapping in a new one when I install my Quaife. That probably won't be for a while though, so I won't be able to tell you if that fixed the problem or not for a while....
are you in new mexico?
i am in new hampshire, but if you are interested, i could find out how much it would cost to ship to you - i just need the weight of my tranny, which i can get, and your zip code. i will find out the cheapest, but secure, way to ship it to you. just let me know if you are still interested.
