89 Civic Hatchback Problem
I am new to the forums and I am looking for some help. Some backround of the car: it is a blue 89 Civic Hatchback with 176,000 miles. The clutch has been replaced once around 8 years ago. When we moved, the owners manual to the car was lost. Here is my questions. Recentlyt while I was driving I realized that when I floored the gas, the RPM's would spike up to redline. I would then have to back off of the gas and it would gradually catch. The car can barely get up the hills that are here in Tennessee. I called the Honda dealership and they said it sounds like the clutch is bad. Another person I know said that the Vtec could be bad. Does my car even come with a Vtec???? I will be getting another car in around 8 months so I am wondering if it is a clutch problem or a vtec problem is it worth it to get it replaced?????? I got a quote for the clutch and it would be around 400 dollars to buy it and 800 to install it. Does that sound reasonable???? Any feedback would be greatly appreciated!!!
Thank you!
Brian

Stock replacement clutch should be 100-150.
Labor to install should be 100-150.
Be sure to resurface the flywheel, but it may be an extra $30 or so.
Total to replace clutch = $300ish.
If that's how much it costs to replace a cluth in TN, I'd think about moving there. By the way, it takes me about hour to change a clutch in an 89 civic.

yeah its something like that...but it would be better installing urself...but i dont know if ur into racing or what not, if u are, get a racing clutch, it will be a little more, but its worth it....i got my new stock clutch put in last december, actually close to a year ago...and the way i beat on my ****, i need a new one....just spend the bigger bucks, and put it in urself, if u have any questions just ask!

You must be superman.
Dude....The person that told you your vtec was bad is either a total complete ******* idiot or was jerking you around.
You car has no VTEC, and even if it did the only symptoms you`d get from loss of VTEC would be no power in the high rpms.
Your clutch is toast.
2 things: You can lossen teh clutch cable a bit...this will apply more pressure on the clutch...hopefully.
Change that thing asap cause its a matter of days before it doenst move at all.
Clutches are usually about 100-150$ install can be done yourself...takes a good day usually. You'll need a torque wrench that can do 19 to 43 ft-lbs, 10,12,14,17, 32 mm sockets 6 point and 10,12,14,17 mm 12 point. A clutch alignment tool, something to hold up the engine and something to hold up the tranny (2 jacks works). A pickle for or other to seperate teh axle from the tranny and a prybar for the axle nut ~ 300 ft lbs.
I`d recommened resurfacing the flywheel also.
You`ll need the following parts:
Pilot bearing (ask to have it changed when resurfacing)
Release bearing ~ 15-20$
Pressure plate
Clutch disc
Moly grease.

if u get an aftermarket/racing clutch, all that **** should come in the kit, well the throw-out(release) bearing, pressure plate, the alig. tool, disc, i dont believe a piolit bearing comes with it, but there like $10 or so, i forget how much i paid for mine....but YES get the flywheel resurfaced, no recommending, DO IT..if ur clutch is as bad as u say it is....u NEED it done!
I got my stock Exedy replacement from http://www.clutchcityonline.com They sell a complete kit for your car shipped to your door for like 120-130. Or you can just order the disk/plate and t.o.b. for a little bit cheaper if you dont want to replace your pilot bearing and have an alignment tool. Either way, check em out.

You werente kidding ?
Yikes.....yes anything that produces popwer must have torque...torque is the force the engine can exert at a certain distance from the center of rotation. This is colsely linked to power ouput. Torqe x RPM / 5300 (or so) = HP
I was just kidding about not having torque....cause of the massive ammounts put out by the d15. If the car has low torque, it will exert less force on the clurch and will not break loose from it....hence usually requries a weak clutch.
This is what you upgrade when you are upgrading clutches....not because of added HP but because of added torque.
