Default Porsche Boxster Owner's Perception of the ITR

My dad, who is a huge car guy and currently owns (and loves) a Porsche Boxster S, was visiting this weekend so I thought I'd take him out for a drive in the R. We left very early on Sunday morning, heading for my favorite country road - plenty of dramatic elevation changes, tight stuff, sweepers, off camber bends, in short a perfect road that really puts the car through its paces.

I ran the car up and it was behaving gorgeously. Perfect balance. For the first few corners my dad was chatting, but he got quiet real quick. I stopped the car and look over and he is grinning from ear to ear and asks to drive back - so I throw him the keys.

He takes it easy at first but is soon going at a nice pace. It was very interesting to feel the car dynamics from the passenger seat. Anyway, at the end of the drive these were some of his thoughts:

- Took awhile to get used to the FWD
- Nose seemed to get a bit light at around 90mph
- The car seemed nicely balanced and communicated to the driver "extremely" wel - better than his Porschel
- There was so much grip left. The car was simply shrugging off anything we threw at it
- My ITR would have left his Boxster S far behind through those roads
- He loved it and talked about it all day long...

high praise, as the boxter is supposed to be a fine handling car to begin with.

That's great how you can share an experience like that.

Coolness.

My Dad HATES import cars. An automotive redneck of sorts.
Anyway, he drove my R last month for the first time.
He asked to buy it from me if I ever decide to let it go.

I love winning over the old school crowd.

My dad's driven my car a couple times, too loud for him, and he can't stand not having torque, although he said "wow that vtec really gives an extra kick in the seat" He also used the 9,000 rev limiter a couple times. He's used to his C5 which has plenty of power just off idle.

First off, my dad needs to buy a sports car to begin with. And I had similar experiences when comparing my old car (Porsche 951) to an ITR.

great post - I have to deal with porsche people all day at work - It's nice when I get to hand over the keys or take someone out for a ride..they always get a kick.
check out http://www.pelicanbbs.com / http://www.pelicanparts.com
It's nice when others appreciate the car - especially p-car owners - they are quite judgementl when it comes to cars

thanks again - happy holidays

Even most Porsche enthusiasts agree the Boxter is a better design than the 911. I would agree. Too bad it doesn't have a coupe model and more power.

I forwarded this to a friend who races an FV, since we were just talking about something similar the other day (even though it was mostly S2K vs. Boxter S).

.....that's funny, because I've chatted for about an hour with a boxter owner (not even the S) and found him to be the of the exact opposite opinion.

He tracked his car quite frequently, and didn't like anything that was FF. Period.

Cool guy otherwise.

I think everyone here should attend a few PCA (Porsche Club of America) events. They are usually made up of about 50% genuine Porsche enthusiasts, and about 50% rich people with nothing better to do. And usually quite a few of them get real bent out of shape when someone proposes that anything besides a Porsche can beat a Porsche at anything.

Well, um, given the chance, wouldn't you rather your car be anything but front-wheel-drive? Integras handle well, but FWD is a compromise from its economy-car heritage.

My dad seriously loves driving my car, I can't keep him out of it all the times that I am home. He drives a 56' Bel Air every day, so my car is a very nice change of pace for him. He of course has his own gripes about the car. Doesn't like the exhaust, rides a little rough from time to time, etc. I can always tell when he hits it hard though because he always comes back with an ear to ear smile as he throws me my keys.

On track, I'd take a stock itr vs a stock boxter. Nevermind my modded one would not only take his lunch, it'd eat it too.

Out of pocket, you can see which car I chose... saved about double the cost of the itr... Heck, with the $ I saved getting an itr instead of a boxter, I can buy another itr and make it my track toy.

But your point is well taken. That is the biggest downfall of the dc2 imho..... If only they'd kept the development around for another generation and made FR, MR, or AWD versions..... *sigh*

In a straight line, I'd be inclined to agree with you.

Around a road course, I've found the opposite to be true (unofficially timed laps) vs a variety of cars...

And I'm an average driver at best.
