What is a "baffle" in relation to a Oil catch can, mean?
I have a Greddy oil catch can and it does just fine in collecting the oil, but I was wondering what does putting a baffle in mean? Ive heard a lot of guys talking about it, but I am not so sure as to what it is supposed to be. What kind of material? Can anyone shed some light on this please?
Don't know how well I can explain this without a pic, but I'll try. I hope you have your PCV valve hooked to the catch-can rather than the breather tube on the valve cover! The idea of a baffle is redirect the flow of vapor with the intent of extracting more oil. A lot of catch cans flow like this; inlet tube-inside canister-outlet tube. By leading the vapor into an open container, the idea is more oil has a chance of falling out of the vapor. Now imagine this; inlet tube-vapor hits baffle-vapor is redirected down into can-air flows back up other side of baffle-outlet tube. Did that make sense? The key is to add a baffle that DOES NOT impede flow! Do a search on the Endyn board for info. It has been beaten to death there!
If you do not have baffling in the oil catch can there is nothing to seperate the oil droplets from the oil vapors. Therefore, some oil droplets would not be caught in the oil catch can and they would enter the intake manifold. Here is the diagram from Endyn (T.O.O.)
