Default top dead center

how do i know if the piston is top dead center?

Line the white mark on the crank pulley up with the timing mark on the timing belt cover.

Either that, or remove a spark plug #1 and stick the dipstick down the hole until it hits... with the car in 5th move the car until the dipstick is at its highest point. If you take the valve cover off you can just line up the cam gears.

The first method is the most accurate.
