Default catalistic heat sheild?

hey all,
When my rpm hits about 3.5k n up, there is this loud rattling that most definatly comes from something in the exhuast, its espically bad when the car isnt fully warmed up. I jacked up the car n looked at the exhuast setup it looks like its comming from the cat. BTW my car is a 2000 LS with a full apexi N1 catback. any idea? any had this prob happen to them???

Thanx

if you bottomed out hard enough, you could have dented your cat's heat shield enough to tap with certain RPM's. You might consider either banging out the heat shield with a hammer or taking it off completely. Some people might argue that taking it off is a bad idea, others and myself say it's cool to do (just heats up your shift rod, don't use a metal shifter on long drives).

Do you have the stock header by any chance? Those are known to rattle around that RPM range.

I've removed the heatshield(s) above where the cat sits. No problems.

yea I do still have my stock headers with the stock header heat sheild. Also I did hit a big hole the other day that wasnt marked by the city and it knocked my sideskirt loose (broke one of the clip) so I think that might be the problem, it prolly dented the heat sheild, should i just go all out and have my cat replaced with an aftermarket cat?? Anyone know a good one? Catco??

i would 1st check if it is damaged. most likely it could be the heatshield on the cat cracking and is now vibrating. mine was doing it for a while til the heatshield actually fell off

it is the back heat shield on the stock exhaust manifold. The only bad part is that you have to take the whole thing off to take the back heat shield off.

nomacgsr is correct. no more then 10 minutes ago i jacked my car up and took off the heat shield on the cat. this was not the problem. it is either the back heat shield on the exhaust which is a bi*ch to get off, or it is that screen inside the cat that is cracked and vibrates.

now, since you said u have a full N1 cat back i don't believe there is a heat shield on the piping. therefore it is most likely something inside the cat. i think the new cat is the best idea it's how i plan on solving the problem.

after Xmas im ordering dc sports ceramic coated 421 header with a catco cat and n1 cat back.
hopefully i will not have to hear that god awful rattle at 3200 rpm after that!.
