Default jdm h22 swap...is this normal?! help! pics

just picked the car up today. i was about 15 min into driving home when the check engine light came on...i called the mechanic, he sed probly no big deal...bring it by tomorrow and ill look at it..(couldnt go back, i left when they closed)...everything seemed fine....when i got home i tried to jump the ecu to find the code, but nothing happened. i dont know if i did it right. i drove around the block and it came on again. so i popped the hood to look at the engine, and everything looked normal...tried to start it and it didnt come on...it almost started then sputtered...so i looked at the engine again and i noticed above the engine code on the block there is a hole....the same thing was on my f22 but there was a plug in there. i checked my oil and that was cool too....i have no idea whats going on and i am worried....please help!

look to the right of the radiator hose clamp

are you talking about the timing cover?

its a rectangle hole? you can buy one of those at the dealership $7ish

engine light might be an o2 sensor

edit: copy/pasted your URL for pic. Yeah it is the timing cover

On H22's the timing mark is on the flywheel and not on the crank pulley like a lot of other engines so you take the plug off to point the timing gun at the flywheel. The plug is just there so nothing gets inside.
