emissions
Hey guys I just got my emissions tested today (in Maryland) and was way too high in the Hydro carbons deptmt (865, passing is 220). I searched archives and some people said they used their VAFC to turn down thier fuel mapping going into the test. My question is will this work? one of the things the pamphlet they gave me said that the A/F mixture could be incorrect
My CO was way low so that isnt a problem
things I know aren't wrong:
6 week old catalyst
PCV is good
vaccum lines are all good no leaks
spark plugs are in good shape still have plenty of life
my timing may be off I dunno how to check it( it would be nice if someone would tell me how to)

Only the HF has an EGR valve..
HC is to much unconsumed fuel....
for starters..
check your timing.. run the lowest octane fuel you can buy in your area..
toss on a new dist cap and rotor, new plugs are cheap....
make sure the car has been run for 30 min before you take it..and let it idle while you wait to be tested..

I was assuming that since I have a swap that the egr was bypassed though, kuz. Maybe it isn't but there is no egr input to my ecu. Dist cap n rotor are fine, crx si can also vouch for me that my plugs are in good shape, we checked them when we changed my valve cover gasket.
How do u check timing?

i thought you wanted the high octane, for a cleaner burn? why do you say lowest?

Hey; what emissions station did u go2 in MD?
was it Landover, Md?
Go2 autozone or sumwhere and pick up a bottle of this stuff called "emissions" sumthing(cant remember) it shows the back half of a red 3000 GT on the font of the box.its like 7.99 i think.
Its for high performace motors, barely street legal v8's(JDM Motors) stuff like that.
Well woth it, i think
They guarantee you'll pass state emissions.

oh, and just for GK=
if you have a VAFC and no cat, i tried lowering the fuel to -50 out on all counts up to 5K. and i still failed HC, by about 50 points or so.
i was 275, needed 220.
setup
stock b18c
homemade intake
4 t0 1 header (KOS)
no cat on a greddy SP (its an older one also)

i gotta get my emissions check next week here in md, first time for me, do they just do the dyno run and sniff the tail pipe? or is there a visual check under the hood or anything?
lower octane means that there is less oxides in the fuel... this gives it a lower burning point meaning it will burn faster... Think of how diesel burns without a spark plug... It compresses until it ignites because its burning point is so low... It runs off of detonation... Diesel is just a really really low octane fuel... So there is actually more HCs in lower octane fuel but it's burning point is a lot lower at the same time making it easier to burn...

actually the dudes that checked my car just sniffed the tail, because I have a manual and can leave it in neutral n rev it they didnt put it on the dyno. no check under the hood, they didnt even check my CEL light or anything. I was surprised.
so should I run higher octane fuel or lower? I can get 102 octane if nessesary.
