Default Air suspension..??

I'm not really sure where to post this but I would think you guys would have the most experience.

I'm trying to get a feel for how well an air bag or cylnder setup will handle? I would imagine that since bags are very stiff and cylnders don't give at all it would tend to be a pretty stiff ride and it should handle pretty good?

Anyone have thoughts or experience?

I have been planning to run coil overs but honestly it would be nice to get my car up instantly.

my brother has recently gotten air cylinders on his civic, and after riding in it, im gonna have to say it doesnt ride bad at all. it could be that he just has a nice kit, but it rode fine. its also alot of fun to pull up infront of a bunch of people and slam the bitch while they are watchin, all u see is
so air ride is in my book. daily driver or not its still sweet.

I guess you guys haven't read some of the latest performance magazines. Several have done articles on a new air suspension setup for WRX's that supposedly handles AMAZING. SCC did an article on the technical aspects of airbags, and they show that airbags are HIGHLY progressive as far as spring rate (i.e. they start out soft, but get REALLY stiff, REALLY quick). As a result, very heavy duty dampers are required to take advantage of the air bags' progressive spring rate properties.

While most current setups are for show, I bet that if this WRX system takes off, there will be more setups for more cars in development. I bet a system could also be custom-designed to handle extremely well.

You guys that have ridden in cars that didn't handle well.. Do you know if each bag had its own valves or if they were tee'd? Most cheaper kits that only do front back will tee the front and tee the rear bags.. Reason I ask is if they are tee'd when you corner all the air goes from one side to the other and makes them sway. If each bag has its own valves then it should more or less not move in a corner. I also read the wrx articles which is what got me thinking.

I appreciate all your responses so far.. Everyone that doesn't like them could you give me some more details why you don't?

I rode in Ham'ed Hatch's car when he had the air cylinders in and it rode fine. The ride was really cush. I also had friends with mini trucks that were bagged and they rode nice also. Hydraulics ride like **** but bags arent that bad at all. Ham'ed hatchs car had the front and rear on T fittings.

Well i had an Air Clyender setup on my civic , is was good for a show car but Not good for a daily driver at all. At the lowest ride point it handled verry good , i would say more so than my springs. Yes it is true about T'n valves , but once you go into a full setup ( 2 valves for each clyender ) it becomes very hard to get it sitting even. I would not suggest an air setup for anything but a show car , the cons far out go the pros , as now my car has 3 bent strut tower housings , you cant drive with the car at its lowest point (depending on rim size) , you will always have air leeks. But if you are hell bent on going this way I would suggest : 8 3/8 "smc style" valves with slow down valves on the dump sides , Viair 450 Compresser ,and a 5 gal tank.. Do not buy a kit , you could part a setup for around $1000 ... Just my 02
