Grind in 3rd, need some advice.
Ok guys, my brother has a 01 type R and has had a grind going from 2nd to 3rd. This usually happens at any rpm higher then 5k. This has been here for last 1.5 months. Now I remember a while back someone said to change the tranny fluid to another kind but I do not remember what. If this does not solve the problem where can I get syncros for the R and what do they range? price wise.
I know its the syncros on the R, because I had all my syncros 1-6 +reverse, + neutral gear go out on my type S. So I know the grind is from his syncros. So any help and advice you can give me is much appreciated.

I have the identical problem. Anything over 5k it's

Try changing fluid to GM Syncromesh friction modified. Supposed to help, and I'm going to do it soon.

Well I was hoping it was not the syncros, but I wanted to try the gm fluid. Does anyone know the part number?
Also where can I buy the syncros and how much do they cost?

Sad but true ...
Fresh Honda MTL (Manual Tranny Lube), an ES shifter bushing kit (for better feel in selecting a gear), and ... yes, be more careful when driving.
I put 125K miles on my ITR box, and someone else put another 20K on that tranny w/o any problems (so it's not exactly a manufacturing defect).
I'm not surprised you "stripped the gears" in a Type S .... those do take some care and getting used to!

You can get them from any Acura dealer, including the discount places like A&H.
You can get an idea of prices from the website for Acura Carland, although you may be able to find them cheaper elsewhere.
If you are not doing the transmission work yourself (and this is NOT an easy DIY task), then check with the dealer or mechanic who will be doing the work. Some of them do not like installing parts purchased elsewhere.

I think a lot of people experience the same problem. I've had to granny shift those gears for 2 track events!! it sucked!! I had mine rebuilt. Bought the the gears and sychro for about $150 using a friend's employee disc. I pulled the tranny myself and had a shop rebuilt it w/ the new parts for $200. I beleive most everyone would recommend the OEM Honda tranny fluid. The shop also said the Redline stuff is good.

Do they make universal bushings? I have a "custom" shift link for my b16EF

Ok to clarify things up I do not own the R or drive it daily. So remeber I did not grind the gears in the R, so calm down folks.
As for the type S the syncros were not my fault. I have a 02 rsx-s and my vin number fell in a service bulletin from Acura regarding the syncros going bad and grinding. Bell Acura took care of me and replaced them all under warranty and the service bulletin.
So just to let everyone know I can drive and do very well with my car. But damn, you guys still hate the type S don't ya. hahha..
Maybe if I paint it yellow..LOL.
Oh well all jokes aside thanks for the help guys, a bit cocky but you guys reply back fast with good answers.. besides the " learn to drive" comments.
Also which would be better, the OEM tranny fluid or the GM micromesh fluid?

Oh. My comment was towards your brother/owner of the R. Not you. And I actually happen to like DC5s.
And OEM transmission fluid works for me. But like Willard and a couple of other nutty bastids, I change my transmission fluid every 6-9K miles.

I used to have a little Grind problem when shifting to 5th at above 5k rpm. I changed the tranny oil and install a spOOn magnet plug....after that, the grind went away.
I don't know how bad is yours....but you can try.

I wasn't taking anything serious bro, I never do. I like to joke around a lot to so all good bro. I do drive the R from time to time and I like it a lot. Originally when I had went to the dealership I was on a mission to purchase a CW ITR, but they had already discontinued them. They had a black R, that had been scratched and dented from the freight truck and was already reserved for another customer. I will still get an R some day, a CW. I want to be cocky just like the rest of you guys. hahah.
And another question if you guys dont mind is how do I go about draining the fluid and installing the new fluid? Is it pretty straight forward ( drain, empty, refill with new fluid) or is there a process you have to do to change it? Once again any help you can provide me is much appreciated guys.

Fairly straight foward. Just make sure the car is as level as possible before filling up the transmission case.

So I can drain the tranny completly dry and it will be fine then I can fill the tranny up with the Gm fluid. Also where is the drain plug? I want to make sure I'm on the right track. Thanks guys.

If you're going to work on your brother's car, you should have a copy of the service manual.
