It is a 99 3.2 TL and sometime when idiling the rpms will surge from 500-2000
What could cause this? It does not do it all the time but is really anoying.

bad timing, ICV (idle control valve) is bad, injectors are clogged, a fuel delivery problem, bad grounding, etc...
its many possibilities. i have a feeling it is a timing issue.
are there any codes being thrown from the CEL?

 

O2 sensor???

 

Check your radiator and fill it up.

 

would teh radiator cause it to do that? Thanks for all the suggestions I will check them out. any other suggestions.

If your car is still under warranty, take that bad boy to the dealership.

I heard about TLs idling weird though.

 

nope no more warranty.. it sucks. I will try nd fix it myelf and if all else fails then to the dealership it goes.

it just started doing it on its own. It is COMPLETELY stock.

does it go all the way to 2000 and stay there for a bit? or just bounce back down .. it might be just the weather, cold starts... mine idles at like 1500 on cold mornings... then when engine is warm..much lower. surging on my tach does happen.. but never 2k. just a thought.

 

sounds like the IAC or TPS to me. check those first. if there are any CEL, that would help a ton.
