Default Motor oil or tranny fluid?

How many quarts of fluid/oil does the tanny take? i heard that you can put 10/30 motor oil instead of tanny oil, is it true? if so, what do you guys think about putting Synthetic 10/30 motor oil?

Use Honda MTF. Redline will wear your tranny out faster.

If the tranny has any grinds in it put some GM Synchromesh in it. If you search on here you will find some very informative threads about it, it costs between $8-14 per qt. but its worth every penny and works awesome!

Now while everyone will recommend Honda MTF I have not once had a problem with regular old 10w30 now while yes I will probably be going to go with Honda MTF there still isnt any reason why regular oil doesnt work I mean if you read the manual thats even what they recommend themselves.

One thing I would never use again is a high viscosity gear oil. Honda trannys don't like it.

I put regular motor oil in last time and I noticed a difference......Its still fine but it was smoother with MTF.

Hmmmm....now that I think about it I think i put 5w-30 in.....maybe that's the difference. Either way, i'm changing back to MTF very very soon.

they say use 10-30 if you are in a pinch. Make sure it's non synthetic. I have a friend running 20-50 got rid of his grinding third gear but it's a little hard in the morning.

whats the best thing to use if your synchros are totally fugged..and you want to conserve them/avoid any grinds? use the 20w-50? or should i go w/ the gm fluid?

If they are that bad, invest in a new tranny or a rebuild. Additives aren't going to help a serious problem.

I was told by one of the mech's at Honda that you should just use engine oil instead of tranny fluid in our trannies as the syncros can't cut through the oil fast enough if its too thin.

i know....thats what i'm plannning on doing. but i'm just looking for a motor oil that may be able to ease the load on the syncros

Since it doesn't look like you're gonna do a search, here's a link to the thread.

Don't waste your time with the oil, it will be a lot worse in the long run, the oil won't protect the gears near as well as tranny fluid, gm synchromesh is the asbolute best there is, a little expensive but it will save you money in the long run!

10w30 is just fine. Honda MTF if you need that extra security to sleep at night. GM Synchro if you have grinds.
