just wanted to know since i have d16z6 engine on my sol...
i know it requires 87 octane, but is 93 cleaner??
my mechanic told me to put in 93 so that the cat wont dirty up by the gas since my emissions are halfway to the limit...

 

how reputable is he? because octane rating is reflective of the burn rate.

what i mean is lower octane burns faster than higher octane, the higher the octane, the slower the burn.

thats why high compression and boosted engines require high octane, because an engine with a 12.1 comp. ratio produces more heat in the combustion chamber, requiring a slower burning fuel to controll detonation.

for instance, a desel engine has no spark, just high compression to light off the fuel for combustion, which is controlled detonation, if a high compression NA motor uses low octane, this can happen, the compression heat ignites the fuel before the spark, so the combustion happens at the wrong time, and screws up the whole combustion event, resulting in damage.

as far as high octane burning cleaner, mabey some brands do, but that would be news to me if it were true.

diffident yes, remember what i said about compression?

when you turbocharge, your engine has has the same physical compression, but the turbo is throwing in more air than its used to, and since more air is being compressed, your actually artifically increacing the compression ratio. so high octane is a must with bosted engines. if you want to better understand how all this works, get a book or search about how the 4 stroke engine cumbustion process works, the picture will become clear to you then! good luck.
